Western ADSA-SAD meeting provides networking opportunities for dairy students

Dairy science students from four universities recently attended the second annual Western regional meeting of the American Dairy Science Association-Student Affiliate Division (ADSA-SAD) in Visalia, California. The meeting was held March 3-4 and attracted 38 students and advisors, in addition to several industry professionals.

2012 World Ag Expo Seminar: Outlook on dairy’s 2012 prices and beyond

James De Jong (right), agriculture analyst for Rabobank N.A., began his morning seminar echoing how important the export market is to the U.S. dairy industry for 2012 and beyond. “Without this global market we would not have been able to grow at the rate we are accustomed to in the U.S.,” De Jong said. The U.S. dairy industry is highly linked to the global market. To exit that market would mean contracting the industry by 8 to 10 percent, a feat that would be detrimental to most dairymen.

2012 World Ag Expo Seminar: California’s producer associations discuss industry issues

For the first time in recent years, California’s producer associations were in the same public room to speak about issues facing the state’s dairy industry. Executives and producer board members from the California Dairy Campaign (CDC), Milk Producers Council (MPC) and Western United Dairymen (WUD) participated in a question-and-answer roundtable during the show. During the hour-long session, the six-member panel discussed milk pricing, dairy exports, supply management, environmental issues, national dairy reform and intrastate cooperation.

He was convicted of hiring and harboring unauthorized workers. He was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to pay hefty fines. John believes his challenges in finding qualified labor for his dairy are similar to other producers.

From robotic milking to renewable energy and genomics to grazing, producers attending the 2012 Pennsylvania Dairy Summit were offered a variety of topics to stretch their minds. The event was held Feb. 8-9 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Those not able to attend the entire two-day conference in person could participate in the “Core Dairy Track for Dairy Managers,” new to the summit this year.
