The Milk House: The last cowboy

June 30, 2015
Ryan Dennis
He was a man in his 50s, his long braids swinging quietly between his shoulder blades as he pedaled. He moved patiently on an old white bicycle with a ratty flannel jacket and other clothes like it draped over the handlebars and strapped down on the back.

On the Edge of Common Sense: Louie snappin’ bees

June 30, 2015
Baxter Black
Ol’ Louie loved bees. Of all the things I remember about him, I remember that best. He’d be layin’ out in the front yard, daydreamin’ and sunnin’ himself when I’d see an eye open and an ear cock. Then he’d spring to his feet and start snappin’ at the air.

Cull onions: A byproduct feedstuff for cattle

June 30, 2015
Jed Asmus, Jennifer Heguy, and Birgit Puschner
The edible onion, Allium cepa, is a cultivated species in the Allium genus. All members of Allium have important dietary and medicinal properties. On the Edge of Common Sense: Dead sheep

June 30, 2015
Baxter Black
There’s been a dead sheep out in Brent’s wheat field for a month. Emilio had a band of ewes on the cornstalks across the road. I reckon that one got hit by a car.

4 reasons why anaerobic digesters fail

June 29, 2015
Ryan Holzem and John F. Katers
In partial response to the energy crisis in the early 1970s, anaerobic digesters were installed at nearly 200 dairy farms across the U.S., only for the vast majority of these systems to shut down or fail after just a few years of operation. However, with improvements in anaerobic digester technology, as well as a better understanding of the anaerobic digestion process, there was a resurgence of anaerobic digesters being installed on large dairy farms beginning in the late 1990s and continuing to this day.

Doing things with excellence every day, making the right business decisions, caring for the environment and building strong ties with the community is how Pennsylvania dairy producers continue to receive recognition. This year was no different, as it was fortunate to have another dairy farm recognized as one of three award recipients for a prestigious national award.

ICAR Claw Health Atlas: International harmonization of claw data recording

June 26, 2015
Lameness in dairy cattle is a major issue worldwide that affects animal welfare and management. Foot and claw disorders are the predominant cause of lameness, result in reduced milk production and reproductive performance, and rank high among the reasons for involuntary culling of cows, implying considerable impact on farm profitability.
