New York dairy farmer Barbara Hanselman spoke in favor of Schumer’s proposal, which would have dairy cooperatives pay 75 percent of the premium that farmers would need to pay if they want dairy insurance.

The market tone is weak as the U.S. and Europe head into the spring flush. Milk powder and butter prices dropped 15 to 25 percent from mid-March to late April. Whey prices are down nearly 30 percent in the last 14 months. Whey protein concentrate prices are down close to 40 percent in the last year.
Since 2000, anaerobic digesters on livestock farms have reduced greenhouse gas emission by 19 millionmetric tons of CO2 equivalent. That reduction is equivalent to other potential reductions or mitigations listed in the PDF below.
Butter, cheese, nonfat dry (NDM) and skim powder (SMP) utilize about 65 percent of the nation’s milk production. In some states, especially the nation’s largest milk-producing states, the percent of milk used by these products is even greater.
