Names in the News: Longs Peak Dairy, Marty DeHoog and Birchrun Hills Farm

February 24, 2015
Longs Peak Dairy Pierce, Colorado The Greeley Tribune recently published a feature story about Longs Peak Dairy in Weld County, Colorado. The newspaper wanted its readers to know that much of the milk available for purchase at area grocery stores is produced close to home, at operations like Longs Peak Dairy. The dairy began with 40 milking cows in 1968 and has grown to 4,800 milking cows. Click here to read the Greeley Tribune article.

Checkoff Watch: Consumers care about animal care

February 24, 2015
It’s a simple, indisputable truth: The moment your customers stop trusting you is the moment they stop buying from you. This is true if your business is cars or clothing, meat or milk. Look at what the distrust in baby formula did to the Chinese dairy industry just a few years ago … and what happens when improperly processed cheese sickens children.

Your people management philosophy drives execution, results

February 24, 2015
Jorge M. Estrada
In the beginning, your dairy company probably didn’t need to spell out a people management philosophy. You did everything yourself. You managed as you saw fit. As you have grown and now execute and produce results through others, it is key in business to have clarity around what your people management philosophy is and how that is helping you (or hindering you) in accomplishing results.

Risk is a four-letter word

February 24, 2015
Curtis Bosma
Never in my wildest dreams did I picture myself living and working in Chicago as a licensed commodity futures and options broker. The son of a third-generation dairy farmer, I grew up on a farm in Tulare County, California. My background on the farm gives me a very unique perspective on the work I do now. I have seen first-hand the challenges and frustrations producers have when the markets do not move in their favor.

Driving forward with only a rear-view mirror

February 24, 2015
Mike North
My oldest daughter is only 10. However, much like her father, she has a very inquisitive spirit. She likes to know how things work. She asks a lot of questions. This includes questions about her future and what she will be doing and what life might be like when she is older.

Strategies to protect your investment

February 24, 2015
Michael Coe
Editor’s note: This article is the final article of a three-part series. Chronic immunosuppressive diseases have a significant economic impact on many areas of a dairy. In the case of persistently infected (PI) cows, they often cull themselves early for a number of health or reproductive reasons, but it’s not unusual to find second-lactation cows that are still milking.

When and how to euthanize calves

February 24, 2015
Frank Garry
Every good calf manager strives to achieve optimal calf health and growth. It’s a fact of life, however, that some calves will get sick. Therefore, managers also have plans for identifying and treating diseased calves. Ideally, if sick calves are identified promptly and treated appropriately, they will recover and go on to be healthy productive adults.

Make educated choice on transition cows’ calcium delivery

February 24, 2015
Terry Arver
The administration of supplemental calcium to combat subclinical hypocalcemia in transition cows is a growing practice in the dairy industry. However, most producers may not be aware of the specific details behind many of the new supplemental calcium products now available.

The cost of subclinical ketosis

February 24, 2015
Jessica McArt and Daryl Nydam
Negative energy balance (NEB) occurs in early lactation dairy cattle when the energy they need for milk production exceeds the amount available through feed intake. To have more energy, these cows break down fat stores to produce non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and ketone bodies (e.g., beta-hydroxybutyrate, BHBA), which act as alternate fuel sources.
