How Do I Determine?: How do I calculate Temperature-Humidity Index (THI)?

June 11, 2014
Todd Bilby
Q. Why is this a top resource article? "Research continues to focus on ways to alleviate heat stress through genetic advancement and knowledge around genes that are important in alleviating heat load, hormonal manipulation such as the use of human chorionic gonadotropin to improve pregnancy retention, feed additives that potentially reduce core body temperature and, lastly, advancements in cooling systems and areas of opportunities with cooling such as dry cows." —Todd Bilby, Merck Animal Health The Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) is a valuable measure that you know when cows are becoming heat-stressed and to what degree so you can use cooling methods appropriately. Heat stress is caused by a combination of temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, air movement and precipitation. The majority of studies on heat stress in livestock focus on the two main environmental stressors: temperature and relative humidity (RH).

Coaching employees is personal

June 11, 2014
Jon Wilcox
We default to sports when we think of coaching, and we have many examples of successful coaches with vastly different styles. Bobby Knight, a college basketball coach with more than 900 victories and nicknamed “The General,” was perhaps most famously remembered for his fierce, combative, expletive-laden, chair-throwing style. Yet he’s loyally defended and fanatically revered by most of his former players.

Component variation: The billion-dollar lost opportunity

June 11, 2014
John Geuss
The dairy industry is always changing. Shifting consumer tastes, advances in technology and increasing exports drive the current changes. Less fluid milk is consumed, more cheese is consumed, more Greek-style yogurt is consumed, and more low-moisture products such as nonfat dry milk are exported. Today’s dairy growth markets all need dairy components, not water.
