National Dairy FARM Program reaches 70 percent participation

The dairy industry’s animal care program has achieved an important milestone, with 70 percent of the nation’s milk now participating in the program. With the recent addition of several major cooperatives in the National Dairy FARM Program (Farmers Assuring Responsible Management), more than two-thirds of the nation’s cows will be covered.

NASS to provide partial milk production estimates for rest of 2013

The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service will provide an estimate of U.S. milk production each month through September 2013, which is the end of federal fiscal year 2013. The agency will use only various sources of administrative data to establish the monthly milk production estimates rather than incorporating information from the two remaining quarterly producer surveys, as is presently done.

The calves arrive straight from the farm between 300 and 400 pounds and stay until two months before calving. Herd health is of utmost important to the veterinarian and grower. He has implemented a strict vaccination protocol that begins before the animals ever arrive on his farm.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) announced March 21 that the USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, has confirmed bovine tuberculosis in the lymph nodes of a Saginaw County dairy cow identified during slaughter surveillance.
