Reproductive measures: Which ones give you an edge?

April 27, 2011
Neil Michael
Despite all of the advances in technology and synchronization protocols in recent years, many producers still find themselves struggling to consistently achieve high reproductive performance. Although attributing mediocre results to genetics or high production is interesting conversation, as managers and consultants, we are continuing to learn how to improve reproductive profits through effective monitoring of data, optimization of cow comfort and transition programs.

Commit to getting heifers bred on time

April 26, 2011
John Lee
Are you interested in making an extra $60 per heifer? What kind of difference would that make to your bottom line? Many dairies I work with have the opportunity to reduce heifer-raising costs by at least $60 per head. On some operations, potential savings is even higher. Dairies that routinely achieve pregnancy rates of 20 percent or higher in the milking herd often find their heifers are calving for the first time at 25 months old or later. That extra month beyond the recommended 24 months at first calving adds around $60 in feed costs alone, in addition to other costs associated with housing, labor and so forth.

Adjustments in PTAs offer improved efficiency

April 26, 2011
Bennet Cassell and George Wiggans
In April 2010, AIPL began to make adjustments to PTAs on cows with genomic tests available. These adjustments were necessary because PTAs on highly selected, genomically tested cows did not improve accuracy of genomic predictions.

Mechanics Corner: Fuel injection: A technological stride

April 26, 2011
Jim Schlund
Editor’s note: The following is the first of a two-part article series regarding diesel fuel injection systems. Throughout the past few months, you have read about the history of diesel engines, Tier 4 emissions standards and the SCR and EGR engines. In this column, I’d like to return to electronic fuel controls, more specifically – diesel fuel injection systems. To start off, I’d like to discuss a few points regarding the history of the electronically-controlled fuel injection systems. Somewhere in the late ’70s, manufacturers started noticing that emissions standards were starting to increase at a strong rate.

American Farmland Trust says: Significant changes to the Farm Bill are likely in 2012

April 26, 2011
“Changes in the 2012 Farm Bill appear both likely and may be significant, if not radical,” says Jon Scholl, President of American Farmland Trust (AFT). “Our country’s economic situation will be the most significant driver and agent of change in the 2012 Farm Bill.” The Wall Street Journal reports that Standard & Poor’s has just lowered its outlook on the government’s debt level to negative, the first time for such a rating. The article also notes the federal government is just weeks shy of hitting its $14.2 trillion debt ceiling authorized by Congress.

I belong to... CBB: Patty Bikowsky

April 26, 2011
Age: 60 Location: Madison, New York My dairy’s history: This is a first-generation farm. I was brought up on a farm in Massachusetts, but moved to this farm 36 years ago. If I wasn’t a dairy producer, I would be … a rancher or crop farmer. I taught school for three years but soon realized I needed to be outside working the land and raising animals. I have been a member of the Beef Board for … four months.
