Dairy producers implement Environmental Management Systems

Dairy producers from around Wisconsin took part in a special project to support superior environmental performance through the development and implementation of an Environmental Management System for their farm. The Dairy Business Association - Green Tier Advancement Project (DBA-GTAP) was a joint venture between DBA and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The purpose was to change attitudes and behavior in the Wisconsin dairy sector by exploring the use of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) as a tool to establish voluntary environmental improvement goals, measure progress and ultimately protect the natural resources within the state of Wisconsin.

Early this year, news outlets reported legislation would be introduced in your state that would make non-therapeutic antimicrobial use a misdemeanor offense.Is New York the first state to see such a bill? SUAREZ: It would not surprise me to hear that other states are also considering similar legislation, particularly in the West Coast, but I am unaware of any other state only bills at this point. New York’s tremendous representation in the Legislature of people from New York City is a particular challenge to us.

Thanks to Dairy Challenge, non-ag student now proud part of dairy industry

Michael Schutz, professor of animal sciences at Purdue University, has been involved with the North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge for several years. He co-teaches a course with Tamilee Nennich called "Dairy Farm Evaluation," which is comparable to the Dairy Challenge events. Schutz shared with Progressive Dairyman a story of a student who came to Purdue without an ag background but with a passion for dairy. Here's our interview with that student — Michele Jones (pictured at right) — who is now working in the dairy industry, thanks in large part to the Dairy Challenge program.

The sixth annual Dairy Business Association's (DBA) Expansion Symposium will be held Feb. 24-25, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The simple goal of growing Wisconsin's dairy industry is the charge DBA is leading at the 2011 Symposium. Following two years of low milk prices and increasing costs for corn and fertilizer, farmers need the skills necessary to help protect and grow their livelihoods. This year's Expansion Symposium will give attendees the information they need to keep their dairies progressive and profitable.

Dairy Alliance hosting calf health workshops

Dairy producers and their employees have the opportunity to improve their calf raising skills at the upcoming Calf Health and Management Workshops presented by Penn State Dairy Alliance. This Calf Health and Management Workshop will focus on calf care for animals from birth through 6 months of age. Colostrum management, calf health, vaccines for calves and younger heifers, calf and weaned calf housing, and calf and weaned calf nutrition are among the topics to be explored. Animal well-being issues will also be discussed.

Western States, Albertsons partner to ‘Dump Hunger’ throughout Intermountain West

Western States and Albertsons are teaming up to raise both food and awareness during the most challenging time of year for local food banks. The “Dump Hunger” campaign hopes to generate 225,000 pounds of food to support communities across the Intermountain West following the holiday season. Donations to the campaign can be brought to any of the Western States branch locations or participating ALBERTSONS stores.
