Throughout the past few months, you have read about the history of diesel engines, Tier 4 emissions standards and the SCR and EGR engines. In this column, I’d like to return to electronic fuel controls, more specifically – diesel fuel injection systems. To start off, I’d like to discuss a few points regarding the history of the electronically-controlled fuel injection systems. Somewhere in the late ’70s, manufacturers started noticing that emissions standards were starting to increase at a strong rate.

American Farmland Trust says: Significant changes to the Farm Bill are likely in 2012

“Changes in the 2012 Farm Bill appear both likely and may be significant, if not radical,” says Jon Scholl, President of American Farmland Trust (AFT). “Our country’s economic situation will be the most significant driver and agent of change in the 2012 Farm Bill.” The Wall Street Journal reports that Standard & Poor’s has just lowered its outlook on the government’s debt level to negative, the first time for such a rating. The article also notes the federal government is just weeks shy of hitting its $14.2 trillion debt ceiling authorized by Congress.

Agricultural design engineer Wayne Raiche retires

Loewen Welding and Manufacturing Ltd. recently announced the retirement of Wayne Raiche, an engineer-designer turned salesman, effective May l. In the 1970s, Raiche found his first employment in engineering in steel fabrication. A friend who owned a welding supply business encouraged Wayne to meet Ernie Loewen, owner of Loewen Welding in Matsqui, British Columbia, Canada.

Midwest Dairy Council selects students to serve as Fuel Up to Play 60 Ambassadors

Midwest Dairy Council announced Katie Osmundson of Robert Frost Elementary in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was selected to serve as a National Student Ambassador for Fuel Up to Play 60’s Student Ambassador Program. Fuel Up to Play 60, an in-school nutrition and physical activity program created in partnership with National Dairy Council and the National Football League, encourages students to eat healthy, be active and implement positive healthy changes at school.

Donations help update, expand U of I research facility

The University of Idaho recently completed its first feeding research trial under a newly renovated facility. In December, the Palouse Research Center near the university campus in Moscow installed 16 new tiestalls and renovated six existing stalls with new stall dividers and rubber mat bedding.
