Your cow has a digital twin – what can she tell you?

Emerging technology from Dalhousie University uses on-farm data to create a cow’s digital twin. This twin can predict health events, test ration changes, improve environmental impacts and more.

A digital twin is a continuously updated virtual version of a real system. In dairy, that system might be an individual cow, a milking robot or the entire barn. The twin mirrors the real-time state of the animal or equipment it represents. When a cow walks to the feedbunk, her virtual counterpart records it.

Project MooLogue: Giving voice to the voiceless and creating smarter, more profitable farms

Dalhousie University has developed an app that analyzes cow vocalizations using artificial intelligence and determines the cause for each.

If your cows could speak, would you listen? It’s the kind of question that makes people smile at first – a whimsical thought you might share over coffee. But for me, it became a serious challenge. If animals are constantly communicating, and we fail to hear them, what opportunities are we missing – not just for better welfare but for better farming?

DairyAir Canada: Methane, satellites and the app that could change everything for Canadian dairy

A new app can track methane emissions from dairy farms. Using satellite imaging, researchers from Dalhousie University have developed a software that will allow producers to understand the impact their dairy has on methane emissions.

In a field outside Truro, Nova Scotia, a Holstein flicks her tail in the sunlight. The barn is quiet. The air smells of hay, damp earth and purpose. Above her, far above, three satellites glide invisibly across the sky. Together, they are measuring something that cannot be seen or smelled but is at the heart of the future of Canadian agriculture: methane.

Listening to cows: Unlocking the secrets of cow communication with AI

Artificial intelligence is allowing humans to understand cow vocalizations. Research is ongoing to determine how to implement this information on dairy farms.

Imagine stepping into your barn and understanding exactly what your cows are feeling – not by watching for obvious signs but by actually "hearing" their emotions. Every moo, bellow and low carries a hidden message, revealing whether a cow is content, stressed or reacting to its environment.

Canada's dairy industry: Can methane reduction targets be hit by 2050?

Identifying roadblocks and opportunities on the path to net zero.
October 22, 2024
Suresh Raja Neethirajan

In Canada, the dairy sector is a major source of agricultural methane, placing it squarely in the spotlight as the country races to meet Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) targets and Canada's net zero by 2050 commitment. However, the industry’s sluggish pace toward emission reductions raises serious doubts about achieving this goal.

How technology advances can help battle ketosis

April 17, 2015
Suresh Raja Neethirajan
Ask any dairy farmer what type of issues they face in today’s industry, and the conversation undoubtedly will move toward money. With most farmers facing decreasing profit margins and some barely hanging on due to increased cost and a stagnant revenue stream, good farmers are always on the lookout for ways to better manage their bottom line.
