The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency shut down Excel Dairy, a 1,500-cow operation located near Thief River Falls in Minnesota, due to several air quality violations through the years. This marks the first time the state has taken such an action against a dairy farm.

After being declared a public health hazard in 2008, Excel Dairy was given a one year permit to meet deadlines regarding its manure lagoons.

Excel Dairy is part of the Dairy Dozen LTD, based in Veblen, South Dakota, that operates large dairies in South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota.
