Export Assistance Watch: H1 CWT-assisted sales reach nearly 69 million pounds

CWT export assistance efforts focus on dairy products that positively impact producers’ milk checks: American-type cheeses, anhydrous milkfat, butter containing 82% butterfat, cream cheese and whole milk powder. All these products are moving the components of U.S. dairy farmer milk overseas.

Exports overtaking fluid products in moving U.S. milk solids

Lower U.S. fluid milk consumption and higher export volumes are changing the balance of how U.S. total milk solids are being sold. Based on calculations by Progressive Dairy, it’s likely the U.S. exported more total milk solids (butterfat, protein and other solids) during the first five months of 2021 than were consumed domestically through fluid product sales.

Has U.S. dairy herd peaked?

Although U.S. dairy cow numbers remain at a 27-year high, the USDA’s June 2021 Milk Production report is the first signal the size of the nation’s herd may have peaked. June 2021 U.S cow numbers were down 1,000 head from May, according to the preliminary estimate, released July 22. Even with June 2021’s small decline, U.S. cow numbers remain the highest since the fourth quarter of 1994.
