FFA Chapters earn $26,000 in Pfizer Animal Health marketing contest

FFA chapters across the country partnered with local suppliers to promote responsible use of animal health products – and 23 chapters earned $26,000 in the process. “Pfizer Animal Health and our partners are longtime supporters of the values and education FFA offers,” says Julian Garcia, group marketing director with Pfizer Animal Health. “This contest allowed us to really get to know individual students and chapters. Not only did these chapters earn funds to help support their activities, but these students made deeper connections to the industry that can help them as they become our future leaders.”

Merck Animal Health promotes responsible practices through residue prevention program

October 26, 2011
Merck Animal Health recently introduced the Antibiotic and Drug Residue Prevention and Avoidance Awareness Program to increase residue awareness and provide solutions to help the dairy and calf ranch industries combat and prevent antibiotic and drug residues. The program toolkit was recently upgraded to include a content list with interactive links to online, bilingual training modules at www.resflorgold.com, www.nuflor.com, www.nuflorgold.com and www.banamine.com, industry friendly tool kit cover and drug inventory move-in and move-out sheets. These additional service options and accessories have been added to further improve efficiencies for dairy producers.

New reality series documents work of veterinarians

Five livestock veterinarians and about 20 of their client farmsin four states volunteered to be filmed for a new reality series, to give consumers a personal and up-close view of responsible livestock farming in the U.S. The series, “Veterinarians on Call,” captures the pride and responsibility of veterinarians in their day-to-day work on U.S. farms and ranches, working with their client livestock farmers and other professionals raising pork, beef and dairy animals. Presented by Pfizer Animal Health, Veterinarians On Call premiered in September on channel YouTube.com/VeterinariansOnCall.

DFA chairman honored for agriculture achievement

October 26, 2011
Randy Mooney, chairman of Dairy Farmers of America, Inc.’s (DFA) Board of Directors, has been honored by Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon with the Governor's Award for Agricultural Achievement, which honors outstanding farmers, growers and processors in a variety of agriculture commodities. During a visit to Mooney’s M&M Dairy in Rogersville, Missouri, Gov. Nixon toured the dairy and presented Randy Mooney with a certificate recognizing his hard work and accomplishments. Mooney, his wife, Jan, and partner Kent Miller milk 300 dairy cows at M&M Dairy, which utilizes an innovative grass-based dairy system. This pasture management system was adopted in 1992 and is designed to maximize forage use by intensively managing plant growth and grazing time.

Penn State workshop will teach best milking practices to Hispanic employees

Spanish-speaking dairy employees can learn standardized milking procedures at the upcoming Best Milking Practices: Hispanic Education workshops offered at multiple sites by the Penn State Extension Dairy Team. The workshops will be taught in Spanish, and are aimed at Spanish-speaking employees with parlor responsibilities.

EXCENEL RTU (ceftiofur hydrochloride) Sterile Suspension is now available in a 250 mL vial. This gives producers and veterinarians a more convenient size of the only treatment for metritis – that also has zero milk discard – approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Ag Secretary Vilsack says Farm Bill must improve disaster aid

October 25, 2011
Lawmakers working on the next Farm Bill need to find an effective way to provide aid to farmers affected by natural disasters, increase funding for agricultural research and continue important conservation programs, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said. The former Iowa governor spoke to about 100 workers who make farm equipment at a John Deere plant in Ankeny, telling them programs funded through the massive spending bill also must be streamlined and simpler to understand.
