Meyer crowned 2011 Western Illinois Dairy Princess

July 18, 2011
Torri Meyer, Liberty, Illinois, was crowned the 2011 Western Illinois Dairy Princess on June 30 at the Western Illinois Dairy Council’s promotion banquet in Paloma, Illinois. Meyer, daughter of Marvin and Brenda Meyer, was crowned by outgoing princess Kari Barry of Liberty. The banquet also honored Randy and Debbie Rossmiller with the Heritage Farm Award. The Rossmiller family has been hauling milk since 1951, when Randy’s dad bought his first axle truck to haul milk in 10-gallon cans. Rossmiller Milk Service now has 13 employees and 12 trucks ranging from 4,300 to 6,500 gallons. The company serves 72 Grade A producers in three states.

As an extension of this online system, the new mobile app, which is available on iPhone and Android smart phone systems, is the latest innovation in the grain commodities trading market designed to connect sellers with their preferred buyer.

Pennsylvania soybean checkoff board awards $110,108 for research and education projects

July 18, 2011
A number of research and education projects designed to provide reliable data to soybean growers, expand markets for soybeans and educate the public have been awarded checkoff grants by the Pennsylvania Soybean Promotion Board. In addition, the Board also awarded grants for research benefiting animal agriculture, the largest domestic user of soymeal and the largest sector of Pennsylvania’s agricultural industry.

Rains just a drop in the bucket against drought

For months, it's been so hot and dry in Louisiana that the 125 cows and 80 heifers at Forrest Hill Dairy were getting a mid-day misting to cool them down. With their usual Kentwood pastures bare dirt, they've been eating baled grasses that Cathy Forrest had planned for winter hay. Even with the noontime break, the cows are too hot to eat as much as usual so milk production is down.

Dean Foods Co., one of the largest dairy distributors in the United States, says it has agreed to pay $140 million to settle a lawsuit over pricing with a group of dairy farmers in the Southeast.

Foundation for the Future now has legislative language

July 15, 2011
U.S. House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Collin C. Peterson, D-Minnesota, made the following statement after releasing a dairy reform discussion draft that would offer protection, create stability and inspire growth in the dairy sector. The draft language is based on reform proposals put forward by the dairy industry. “I released this discussion draft now because we need to act before the next farm bill. If we have another dairy crisis like we had in 2009, we could lose half our dairies. The discussion draft allows us to keep the ball moving while continuing to have a dialogue with the dairy industry.

Chain restaurants will make kids' menus healthier

July 14, 2011
Parents seeking healthier restaurant meals for their kids can start to look beyond chicken nuggets and macaroni-and-cheese. At least 19 restaurant chains – including Burger King, Chili's, IHOP and Friendly's – said Wednesday that they will include healthier options on their children's menus. At least 15,000 restaurant locations will focus on increasing servings of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and low-fat dairy. The items will have less fats, sugars and sodium.

Officials announce Iowa cellulosic plant loan

July 14, 2011
Officials announced plans Thursday for a $105 million loan guarantee to help develop the nation's first commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant near Emmetsburg. When completed, the plant will produce up to 25 million gallons of ethanol per year. Unlike existing ethanol plants, which produce the fuel from corn, the new facility will use stalks, corncobs and leaves to produce ethanol.
