Monsanto to provide more than $1 million to help support 14 major FFA events, programs in 2011

One of the world’s largest agricultural corporations will sponsor 14 high-profile National FFA Organization programs in 2011 designed to develop the leadership, agriscience and teamwork skills of FFA members throughout the country. St. Louis-based Monsanto Company will provide more than $1 million in sponsorships of National FFA Organization programs, awards, events, student scholarships and more this year. Monsanto’s support will help finance the National FFA Organization’s Washington Leadership Conference, National Leadership Conference for State Officers, Agriscience Student of the Year program and 11 other national initiatives.

Dodge County Holstein Breeders host successful annual convention

A nasty ice storm couldn’t keep dairy producers and industry representatives from attending the 2011 Pennsylvania Dairy Summit, held Feb. 2 and 3 at the Lancaster Host Resort and Conference Center. Hosted by the Professional Dairy Managers of Pennsylvania (PDMP) and the Center for Dairy Excellence (CDE), the event featured several speakers, a few of which had to use Skype to present to the group after their flights were cancelled. New report analyzes proposed supply management program

A new report analyzing the proposed Dairy Market Stabilization Program is a thorough lesson in dairy economics. The purpose of the study, as sponsored by the International Dairy Foods Association, was to analyze the regional and farm-level impacts of the potential temporary supply management program if it had been in place from 2000 to 2009. It also highlights the unknown and unpredictable economic aspects of its implementation.

EPA sets final daily pollution load limits for Chesapeake Bay watershed

The EPA on Dec. 29 issued its pollution controls aimed to restore the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Calling it a “pollution diet,” EPA established its final total maximum daily load (TMDL). This action identifies the necessary reductions of nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment from the watershed to clean the Bay and the region’s streams, creeks and rivers by 2025, with 60 percent to be completed by 2017. The agency said that continued poor water quality, despite 25 years of restoration efforts and federal consent decrees, dating from the late 1990s, prompted the TMDLs.
