Margin outlook not as strong for 2011

August 11, 2010
This article was #7 in PDmag's Top 25 most-well read articles in 2010. Summary: In August, Chip Whalen shared how forward profit margins were beginning to deteriorate. Profit margins for Q3 2010 through Q1 2011 were down between 29 cents per hundredweight and 38 cents per hundredweight from where they were three months previously and were currently projecting either breakeven scenarios at best or margins that are only slightly above that level. Because this article was so popular, we asked Whalen a follow-up question:

Rain is a good thing for Maryland & Virginia YCs

August 2, 2010
Just like the song, rain is a good thing, especially for dried out fields, farmers and Maryland & Virginia’s Young Cooperator (YC) Program. Rain showers followed the cooperative’s annual YC Summer Break event in Franklin, Tennesse, in early July. The weather didn’t affect the record attendance of nearly 100 YCs from several states as they toured four dairy farms and capped the evening with a cook-out and hay ride.

High efficiency biogas cogeneration plant planned for dairy farm in Washington

July 30, 2010
The 400 kWh CHP system will be installed in Lynden, Washington, about 95 miles north of Seattle. It is scheduled to be installed in late 2010. Lynden-based DARITECH Inc. will build the anaerobic digester, and the Van Dyk Dairy Farm owns and operates the biogas plant. The plant is expected to produce 4706 MW of thermal energy and 3320 MW of electricity per year, with any excess power sold to the grid. The combined heat and power plant uses the 2G agenitor, a thermodynamically optimized MAN cogeneration gas engine coupled with the patented 2G-Drive technology, especially developed for biogas operations. Benefits over conventional MAN, or any other gas engine, include much higher efficiencies, extended life and less maintenance cost.

Strong storms hit Midwest

July 27, 2010
High temperatures and lots of humidity were the perfect ingredients for severe weather in the Upper Midwest late last week. Heavy rains and storms capable of producing tornados came through Minnesota and Iowa and converged on Wisconsin in the evening hours of Thursday, July 22. The National Weather Service confirmed three tornadoes touched down in southeast Wisconsin. At first, it was reported there were seven tornadoes spotted that evening. Aside from hundreds of trees, only a couple barns, a pole shed and garage were damaged from the tornados that ranged in strength from an F-Zero to an F-Two.
