CDFA plans to form California Dairy Future Task Force

Writing that volatility is "the new reality for dairy farmers," California Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross is calling for cooperation and strategic reform. Ross wrote on the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) website, "If we have learned one thing from this crisis, it is that the current regulatory and pricing system needs to change and all sectors of the industry need to collaborate and develop reforms that can bring new markets and new stability to the marketplace.

InFocus: Waterman Dairy Farm

Two years ago, leaders of Ohio State’s animal science department decided to cut the campus dairy herd, located at the Waterman Dairy Farm, from two breeds to one. The Holsteins were sold to the state prison system, while the Jerseys remained. The herd, which now consists of about 100 milking cows, served as a real-life example of research conducted by Washington State University’s Jude Capper, which she shared at the recent Ohio Dairy Forum.

Zoo study makes cow waterbeds available to moose

Advanced Comfort Technology (ACT), Inc., recently donated DCC Waterbeds for use in the moose holding area of the Minnesota Zoo as part of a zoo-led research study on heat stress. “Moose are traditionally bedded on rubber mats topped with straw in the zoo holding area,” said Nick McCann, conservation biologist and author of the heat stress study. “The rubber mats may be insulating the moose – they may not allow heat to be conducted away from their bodies to the ground below.

Penn State releases DairyCents, a mobile app for income over feed costs

Penn State’s Extension Dairy Team has developed a mobile app titled DairyCents that offers two features: calculate income over feed costs (IOFC) feed price comparisons with the Penn State Feed Price List or other users across the country Income over feed cost is determined by taking milk income per cow minus feed cost per cow and addresses only the lactating animals. It is a simple calculation but for most producers requires a lot of inputs because of all the different feeds fed and grouping strategies. The question arose: Would using readily available market information to simplify the calculation result in a realistic number?

Progressive Dairyman is first place for second consecutive year

At Ag Media Summit, held August 5-7 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Livestock Publications Council (LPC) awarded the Progressive Dairyman team with first-place honors in its annual contest for top non-association publication. This marks the second consecutive year the magazine has beaten out competition from other livestock and ag publications to win the award. “Ever since I came to Progressive Dairyman more than six years ago, we've had a fun ride," says Managing Editor Walt Cooley. "We're celebrating the two-peat, but we also continue to strive for to be worthy of a three-peat."
