Designing dairy ventilation will be focus of Penn State webinar

“The Aerial Environment: Fresh Air and Plenty of It” will be the topic of the next session of the Technology Tuesdays webinar series offered by the Penn State Extension Dairy Team. The webinar will be held Nov. 8 from 8:30 to 10 a.m., Eastern time, and is free of charge. The session is part of the webinar series’ cow-centered housing segment, which focuses on design and evaluation of dairy housing from the cow’s perspective, particularly as it relates to cow comfort and well-being.

Progressive Events: Progressive Dairy Operators

Two busloads of dairy producers and industry representatives crisscrossed through southwestern Ontario on Sept. 16 to see improvements made on area dairies. Hosted by the Progressive Dairy Operators, this mini-bus tour was held in conjunction with Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show, which took place earlier in the week in Woodstock, Ontario.

Dairy Policy Summit addresses price reform, food safety and immigration

The dairy industry’s three big issues – milk pricing, food safety and immigration – will be front and center during the Dairy Policy Summit on Wednesday, Nov. 9, in Madison, Wisconsin. The first session addressing milk price reform will include Dr. Mark Stephenson facilitating an industry panel. The panel includes: Jaime Castaneda, senior vice president, National Milk Producers Federation; Robin Berg, National Dairy Producers Association and president of the Dairy Pricing Association; and Alan Kozak, Dairy Policy Action Committee. Panelists will share their insight and legislation being proposed and how each proposal could affect the dairy business.

Embryo transfer school educates five

Longtime A.I. industry leaders Doug Speicher and Nate Cossaboom recently conducted a three-day training workshop on embryo transfer at Red Knob Dairy in Peach Bottom, Pennsylvania. The five students varied in their backgrounds, but all said the most valuable aspect of the training was practicing palpation.

Penn State workshop will teach best milking practices to Hispanic employees

Spanish-speaking dairy employees can learn standardized milking procedures at the upcoming Best Milking Practices: Hispanic Education workshops offered at multiple sites by the Penn State Extension Dairy Team. The workshops will be taught in Spanish, and are aimed at Spanish-speaking employees with parlor responsibilities.

American Agri-Women convention set for Nov. 10-13 in Wichita

Women involved in agriculture from throughout the U.S. and Canada will head to Wichita, Kansas, Nov. 10-13 for the 36th annual American Agri-Women (AAW) convention. Their purpose reflects the mission of the 40,000-member organization: Gather resources and knowledge to represent the agriculture industry in an educated, professional and passionate manner. Kansas Agri-Women, a state affiliate, is hosting the event. The convention’s theme is “Sharing America’s Harvest.” Download the convention registration form here. Symposium, tours to look at group calf housing

The Cornell Department of Animal Science and PRO-DAIRY are pleased to announce “Group-Housed Dairy Calf Systems – A Symposium and Tours for Producers and Advisors.” Come join many of the 45 known New York and Vermont herds and their veterinarians at the Group-Housed Dairy Calf Systems Symposium in Syracuse, New York on Dec. 1. Eleven tours spread across New York State will follow the next week from Dec. 7-9.

2011 World Dairy Expo: Progressive Dairyman map

This year's World Dairy Expo, themed "Around the World of Dairy in 5 Days," featured some of the world's most progressive operations through farm tours (both virtual and in person) and some of the most progressive ideas and research through seminars and discussions. The Progressive Dairyman team looks forward to the show each year and was excited to bring the map for a second year, featuring both the United States and an international section.
