Golf tournament and luau dinner support AgVentures!

The International Agri-Center will host its annual golf tournament to benefit the AgVentures! Learning Center on Friday, Sept. 30. The tournament is sponsored in part by Western Executive Protection and Pipkin Detective Agency. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit the learning center, which hosts thousands of the County's students each year.

Achieving goals is topic of new webinar for dairy advisory teams

Penn State Extension Dairy Team is resuming its successful Friday Facilitator Forum webinar series for dairy advisory teams in September. “Staying on Course: Helping Your Team to Achieve its Goals” will be presented Sept. 16 by Dr. Lisa Holden, associate professor, Penn State Department of Dairy and Animal Science. This session in the series will offer strategies that dairy advisory teams can use to break long-term goals into manageable chunks that can be monitored and completed. In addition, new tactics for refocusing goals for long-term teams to revitalize and energize team members will be explored.

Learn about silo safety at free Penn State webinar

Silo safety will be the topic of the next session of the Technology Tuesdays webinar series offered by the Penn State Extension Dairy Team. Scheduled Sept. 13, “Silo Safety” will explain how producers can keep employees and others on the farm safe around silos. “This is a good time for all farm workers, managers and their advisors to stop and consider the hazards involve with working around silage and silos,” notes Dr. Robert Graves, agricultural engineer, Penn State Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering. “Review this webinar with your workers and identify the possible inhalation and physical hazards involved with silage making and storage on your farm and learn procedures to eliminate or avoid injury. Make working safely the first goal of all your farm SOPs.”

High-level dairy cow management workshops set for Sept. 13 & 14

Cow comfort and facilities, milk quality and farm safety measures – along with “meat matters” – will be the front-and-center topics covered at a one-day Cow Management Workshop offered on two dates in two Wisconsin locations: Tuesday, Sept. 13, Marshfield, and Wednesday, Sept. 14, Arlington. Both workshops have been developed by dairy producers for dairy producers on behalf of the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) and will challenge even the most seasoned dairy producer or employee who oversees a dairy’s cowherd.

Dairy’s presence at South Dakota State Fair expands

The Dairy Bar Building and its concession at the South Dakota State Fair in Huron, South Dakota, may be the most noticeable part of the dairy industry’s influence there. But look around and it’s easy to see dairy in numerous places. At the concession, Midwest Dairy Association contracts with Habitat for Humanity to serve more than 5,000 milk shakes, 200 gallons of ice cream and 800 gallons of all-you-can-drink milk on behalf of the state’s dairy farmers.

Cattle exhibitors wishing to compete at World Dairy Expo 2011 should log on to World Dairy Expo website now and submit their entries. According to Dairy Cattle Show Manager, Laura Herschleb, entry fees will increase at midnight (CDT) on Thursday, Sept. 1. Paper applications must also be postmarked by that date to avoid late entry fees.
