NASS to resume milk production surveys in October

September 4, 2013
The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will resume milk production quarterly producer surveys in the new federal fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1, 2013. NASS suspended the surveys in April of this year to meet the budget reductions required by sequestration.

Matanuska Creamery CEO charged with fraud

September 2, 2013
Karen B. Olson, former CEO of the now-defunct Matanuska Creamery, has been charged with lying to the USDA and trying to defraud the state of Alaska. A federal grand jury has handed down a six-count amendment with the charges, according to the Alaska Dispatch.

Virginia dairy co-op buys vacant ice cream plant

Valley Pride LLC, a dairy cooperative made up of 21 dairy farms near Harrisonburg, Virginia, has purchased an ice-cream plant in Hagerstown, Maryland, and plans to begin production this fall, according to an article by Julie Greene in the Herald-Mail.

Horizon Dairy keeps a close eye on forage
