Dairy cow fertility study brings together 12 scientists

Fertility in dairy cattle is normally considered a result of multiple environmental factors, but more recently, scientists have determined there may be a greater genetic connection than once thought, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Research scientist. In order to search for genetic markers for fertility, Dr. Pablo Pinedo, an AgriLife Research ruminant animal health scientist, has led a collaborative effort to develop a study that involves seven universities and 12 scientists.

Idaho and New York Senators introduce dairy savings account legislation

March 13, 2013
Senators from leading dairy producing states have introduced bipartisan legislation to encourage dairy producers to invest in risk-reducing farm savings accounts. The Dairy Augmentation for Increased Retail in Yogurt (DAIRY) Act, introduced by Senators Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Charles Schumer (D-New York), would give dairy producers a new tool to manage increasing demand while providing a safety net for volatile market downturns.

DFA plant in Missouri will close down

Eighty-six employees at the Dairy Farmers of America plant in Monett, Missouri, were notified by letter on March 6 that the DFA plant will be shutting down in the second half of 2013.

NASS suspends Milk Production reports due to sequestration

March 12, 2013
USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service is suspending a number of statistical surveys and reports for the remainder of the fiscal year due to reduced funding caused by sequestration. The suspended reports include Milk Production Reports including Production, Disposition and Income reports.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires all dairy employers to provide a safe and healthful workplace free of recognized hazards and follow all applicable standards. Click here to view one of these standards, OSHA Recordkeeping regulation (29 CFR 1904). According to the recordkeeping standard, employers are required to prepare and maintain records of occupational injuries and illnesses.
