Presenting a nutritionally correct diet is important when caring for a dairy cow, but to assume that it is all that is required in terms of the animal’s nutritional well-being is incorrect.
“We need to focus on what the cow does with that feed,” says Trevor DeVries, associate professor in the Department of Animal and Poultry Science at the University of Guelph – Kemptville.
As far as possible, I always try to let the cows be cows. What do I mean by that, you may ask? Cows, by their very nature, can at times do some pretty interesting things. Being on a farm where the grazing animals are Holstein, Jersey and three-way crosses gives you a nice cross-section of all the different personalities one can encounter on a dairy.

I think my dad knew I was in it for the long haul when he handed me the halter to my first Holstein heifer, Starjet.
He simply told me, “Don’t let go.” Excitedly, I took the halter, ready to lead my heifer. She was a fairly large yearling heifer, compared to my small 8-year-old body.
Several years ago, my friend brought me to her house in the suburbs. I can’t recall the rows of houses we passed to reach hers, only that it seemed indefinite because I couldn’t tell them apart.

Roberts Dairy in Omaha, Nebraska, is expanding its facilities to make room for new products, according to an article in the Omaha World-Herald.
The dairy is expanding bottling facilities for the addition of plastic half pint and pint lines, which it started making in November. Completion of the expansion is expected by late spring 2013.
When bovine TB was found in West Texas in 2001, the Legislature banned dairy farming permits in El Paso County and part of Hudspeth County.
Now, a lawmaker wants to repeal the ban.
