Beyond face value: Using infrared forage images

December 7, 2012
Jon Urness
Colorful infrared images of bunk faces have become all the rage with consultants and sales people wanting to promote forage quality and silage additives. One company claims that infrared cameras can show the value of inoculants. Another may state that an infrared image can reveal how well a bunker is packed and covered. Someone else may suggest that infrared images tell only a fraction of the silage quality story.

Farmers’ behavioral health impacts herd health

December 7, 2012
Mike Rosmann
Farmers’ behavioral health affects the animals they raise. Just ask a dog owner. They are well aware their pets sense how they feel. Practitioners of artificial insemination of livestock have long known their stress levels affect the conception rate of the animals they are breeding. Animals detect the tension of the people working with them. Reproductive success diminishes when the A.I. technician is stressed out.

When is a milk price a ‘good’ milk price?

December 7, 2012
Craig Thomas
One of the most difficult decisions dairy producers face is whether or not current milk futures prices are “good” prices. The first problem is: What is a definition of “good”? Frankly, producers look at a “good” price as one that is “high.” So that naturally brings on another question: What is a “high” milk price? That leads to another question: Is the price “high” enough to be profitable?

2012: A year in review

December 7, 2012
Karen Lee
Drought devastates U.S. Corn Belt Extreme to severe drought conditions blanket much of the country by the end of June, with more than 50 percent of the corn crop in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky and Tennessee rated as “poor” to “very poor.” By August, the USDA stepped in to offer assistance to 1,628 unduplicated counties across 33 states designated as disaster areas – 1,496 due to drought. The worst U.S. drought in the last 50 years left a profound impact on American agriculture. With skyrocketing costs for livestock feed and other inputs, dairy producers are losing about 32 cents on every gallon of milk, according to the USDA.

O Holy Night

December 7, 2012
Jeffrey Churchwell
“Come, thou Holy Spirit, come; And from Thy celestial home Shed a ray of light divine.” —Reverend Edward Caswall Back in ’71, there were three major pop talents in my mind and culture: Donny Osmond, Michael Jackson and me, Jeff Churchwell. With much less fanfare than the other two, after supper night after night I would take Ma’s biggest hairbrush and sing to a coliseum full of adoring fans – and everyone within earshot up and down Cardinal Street.

Empty boxes

December 7, 2012
Christmas had always been different for Christina and Albert Ross. They had no aunts, no uncles and no cousins to come and bring them gifts. All they had was their mother. Yet Albert and Christina did have a grandmother. She lived on a ranch out in Oregon, thousands of miles away. They never expected to see her. However, they knew she loved and cared for them.

Meet your dairy consumer: Santa Claus

December 7, 2012
Fredric Ridenour
HOW WE MET: It all started when I heard some sort of clatter out on my lawn last year. Springing from my bed and grabbing my eight-iron (I’ve never trusted my nine-iron), I tiptoed down the stairs to catch what I thought was an intruder rustling around in my living room. Imagine my surprise to find the Jolly Old Elf himself putting goodies under the Christmas tree. I offered him some homemade chocolate chip cookies and he was gracious enough to answer a few of my questions.

HERd management: From seeds to a garden

December 7, 2012
Karma Fitzgerald
As I write this, it is late October. The air is crisp here in southern Idaho. The leaves are waterfalls of color in the backyard and the last of the corn is being harvested to the hum of silage trucks and a bright yellow combine.

Just dropping by ... The Joneses' Christmas

December 7, 2012
I sit here in front of my computer contemplating Christmas. It is a few weeks away but preparation needs to be made. After all, it is the biggest and most anticipated event of the year. Children have “sugarplums” dancing in their heads. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer must guide Santa through the fog to the rooftops in a sleigh laden with gadgets and trinkets to delight every child. Elves must be up and busy.
