Goldman Sachs predicts record corn prices

Three consecutive years of smaller U.S. corn harvests are driving inventories of the world’s most-consumed grain to a 39-year low and spurring Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to predict that prices will rise near record highs. Global stockpiles will drop 11 percent to 117.61 million metric tons by Oct. 1, or 13.6 percent of what will be used for food, ethanol and livestock feed, the lowest ratio since 1974, the USDA said in a recent report.

2012 farm income forecast shows decline

U.S. net farm income is forecast to decline almost $4 billion from its all-time high in 2011. And net cash income is expected to decline almost $2 billion, according to the USDA’s 2012 Farm Income Forecast. The value of agricultural sector production is expected to increase with gains anticipated for crops, livestock, and especially revenues from services and forestry sales. Larger gains are predicted for oil crops and other farm income.

Senate passes bill to normalize trade relations with Russia

A bill to eliminate Cold War-era restrictions on U.S. trade with Russia moved another step forward last week when it was passed by the Senate. The House had already passed the bill. The Holstein Association USA board of directors met in Chicago Nov. 14-15. President Chuck Worden presided over the meeting. The board approved the 2013 Management-by-Objective Business Plan and associated budget. The plan predicts growth in sales of Holstein Association USA’s core products and services. Dairy producers have been experimenting with harvesting corn as shredlage and snaplage. At the University of Wisconsin – Madison, Randy Shaver has been conducting feeding trials of these feedstuffs to see how they perform in the cow. He shared his results at the Vita Plus Dairy Summit, Dec. 5 in Merrillville, Indiana. Shredlage Currently shredlage processing rolls are only available on Claas choppers. These provide a longer theoretical length of cut of 1-¼ inches versus an average ¾-inch length of cut with a kernel processor.

Southern Regional Dairy Challenge draws 60 students to Newberry, South Carolina

The seventh annual Southern Regional Dairy Challenge, which ran Nov. 8-10, attracted 60 students from 11 universities and colleges. The event was hosted by Clemson University. “The Southern Regional Dairy Challenge exposes undergraduate students to dairying in the southeastern U.S. and the unique complexities producers and industry professionals face in this part of the country," says contest planning committee chair Cathy Williams of Louisiana State University.
