Farm Bill still up in the air, House to adjourn Friday

September 18, 2012
Last week, a crowd gathered at Capitol Hill during a Farm Bill Now rally to put pressure on House leaders to pass a five-year bill. But so far, the Farm Bill is still in limbo as the House prepares to end its session this Friday. The House will be on hiatus until after election week. A version of the Farm Bill that was approved by the Senate this summer has not yet been scheduled for a House vote, making passage unlikely before current law expires Sept. 30.

Designing cow-centered facilities for replacements

September 18, 2012
Robert E. Graves
Cow-centered dairy farms include animal- and worker-friendly procedures and facilities for raising dairy replacements from birth to pre-calving. They provide clean, dry and comfortable living spaces for these important animals and accommodate non-uniform calving rates and the changing animal needs based on age, weight, health and management. A variety of housing types and arrangements can be used to assemble a productive replacement raising system including:

Aurora Organic Dairy reaches settlement on marketing claims

September 15, 2012
Aurora Organic Dairy (“Aurora”) has reached an agreement to settle all claims in the consolidated class action lawsuits pending before the U.S. Federal Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals and the district court confirmed that Aurora’s milk was at all times properly labeled and sold as organic, and that Aurora’s milk has been certified as organic by a USDA-accredited certifying agent since 2004. As such, the only remaining action in this lawsuit, which was originally filed in 2007, concerned marketing claims made by Aurora and its customers.

California dairy farmers rally in Sacramento to protest milk prices

September 14, 2012
Yesterday California dairy farmers staged a protest at the front door of the California Department of Food and Agriculture office. It's the latest move in a continuing battle to get the CDFA to raise Class 4b prices. “We’re hoping to draw attention to what Gov. Jerry Brown and [California Department of Food and Agriculture Secretary] Karen Ross are doing to our milk single-handedly,” Jim Wilson, Hanford resident and Fresno County dairy owner, told The Sentinel.

Names in the News: Stacey McCallister

September 13, 2012
Q&A with Missouri producer Stacey McCallister, who was interviewed by CNN for a story about failing dairy farms. Click here to read CNN's story. How did your interview with CNN come about? I am on the Missouri Dairy Association board and had done an interview for Harvest Public Media, who had found me through Facebook. CNN called our chairmen looking for someone to talk to and since I had just done radio they gave them my name along with a couple of others. I talked to reporters a few times about the story and they decided to go with me.

Wisconsin's dairy innovation center to shut down

September 13, 2012
The Dairy Business Innovation Center in Wisconsin is shutting down at the end of September because it lost federal funding and leaders couldn't find enough money elsewhere to keep it going. The center, which started with a $1 million federal earmark secured by Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.), for the past eight years has contracted with consultants to give dairy plants free or low-cost technical assistance with everything from business plans to equipment purchases.
