CIP Challenge: Putting a magnifying glass on maintenance

August 9, 2012
Ron Robinson
Regardless of which hemisphere you call home, if you run a dairy, maintenance issues can sneak up on you. The CIP Detectives were recently called to an 800-cow operation in Japan to catch any culprits that could be affecting milk quality. The dairy in Japan was ISO-certified for environmental management and had been successfully operating for more than 100 years. They had a 60-stall rotary parlor with a 90-lb-per-day milk average.

A common theme: ‘I culled cows and production increased’

August 9, 2012
Ed DePeters
During the Spring quarter at UC – Davis, our dairy cattle production class of 40 students was on the road again doing weekly field trips to 10 dairy farms. We traveled all of California, as far north as Orland and as far south as Hilmar. The objectives were to meet with producers and talk about management practices and issues facing the industry, to meet with professionals in the field (nutritionists and veterinarians) and to look at facilities and animals.

Economic considerations for direct tanker loading on dairies

August 9, 2012
Earl D. Biggers
Editor’s note: The following article is the final installment in a series regarding direct tanker loading systems. In the previous two articles, we considered some of the capital costs and marketing criteria a producer should consider when planning for a milk cooling and storage system. In this article, we’re going to compare the annual operating costs of a direct tanker loading (DTL) system to those same costs for a conventional, on-farm bulk tank system.

Evolution of contagious vs. environmental mastitis

August 9, 2012
Emily Caldwell Gwin
The differences between environmental and contagious mastitis are now largely understood among researchers and dairy producers alike. But it took a great many studies over a number of years to make that distinction. One project in particular that helped to point out the need for new mastitis control methods was developed in the 1960s by The National Institute for Research in Dairying in Britain in cooperation with Cornell University.

New tech

Machine makes hygiene products for pennies per gallon

August 9, 2012
Karen Lee
A hygiene technology that has been in use for more than 30 years in the water treatment industry, but never applied to agriculture, was introduced to the dairy industry earlier this year at World Ag Expo in Tulare, California. Zurex PharmAgra unveiled the ECAlogix System, which makes it possible for dairies to create a large amount of base disinfectant for pennies per gallon directly on the farm.

New Mexico leads in per-cow production

August 9, 2012
Dave Wilkins
No state in the nation has squeezed more milk out of its dairy cows in the past three years than New Mexico. Producers got nearly 25,000 pounds out of each cow in 2011. What’s the secret? A combination of favorable weather, modern dairy facilities and aggressive culling appears to be helping producers get the most out of every cow. Cow comfort is an important consideration whenever new dairies are built, and New Mexico has seen several large new dairies constructed in the past 12 years, says dairyman Luke Woelber of Belen, New Mexico, who is president of Dairy Producers of New Mexico.

Debate over dairy policy reform still not over

August 9, 2012
Walt Cooley
Dairy reform’s most controversial issue isn’t going away quietly. Supply management for U.S. milk production survived the House Ag Committee’s markup of the 2012 Farm Bill on a bipartisan 29-17 vote, even as opponents proposed to strip it from the bill. Puerto Rico’s not-so-secret dairy industry

August 9, 2012
Darren Olsen
If agriculture and Puerto Rico appear in the same sentence, most people would think of sugar cane, bananas or other tropical fruits. Yet, the dairy industry in Puerto Rico represents 25 percent of the island’s total agricultural-related income at more than $215 million dollars annually. Milk production is the single-biggest sector of Puerto Rico’s ag economy.

3 open minutes with Charlie Arnot

August 9, 2012
Walt Cooley
Ag communications consultant and owner of CMA Consulting Charlie Arnot recently said this summer’s consumer and news media attention on food brands and agriculture production should be an “inflection point” in how agriculture perceives crisis management and the defense of traditional farming practices. Progressive Dairyman Editor Walt Cooley asked Arnot to explain his statement.

Keep safety first during silage packing season

August 9, 2012
Keith Bolsen
From 2007 to 2011, an average of 108.5 million tons of whole-plant corn was harvested annually for silage in the U.S. The majority of corn silage was stored in large bunker silos and drive-over piles. But filling bunkers and piles can pose serious risk to you and your employees – especially those who operate the pack tractors.
