Rotational grazing makes economic sense for Missouri dairy

August 9, 2012
Dave Wilkins
Fourth-generation dairyman Mike Meier likes to go hunting in December and January. There’s no reason to bring in hired labor to milk his 92-head herd while he’s gone. All the cows are dry. Meier first became intrigued with the idea of seasonal grazing when, in the mid-1990s, a demonstration dairy at the University of Missouri’s Southwest Research Center started showing the economic benefits of such a system.

The realities of robotic milking technology today

August 9, 2012
Francisco Rodriguez
I was born and raised on a dairy farm in Colombia where, from an early age, I was embracing the lifestyle of and nurturing a passion for milking cows. My family and I organized our lives and schedules around the needs of the herd. The challenge of finding the right competencies on our dairy inspired me to attend veterinary school.

Audit team: Ration and milk quality both needed review

August 9, 2012
David Greene
When a 1,150-cow dairy asked for a TMR audit, we welcomed the opportunity to work with this well-run operation to help it gain ever greater production efficiencies. Even well-run dairies often have opportunities that an outsider can see more easily than someone immersed in the dairy’s daily management.

Forage digestibility: Beyond NDF

August 9, 2012
While the total neutral detergent fiber content (NDF on a DM basis) of a forage crop is a major factor in defining the overall maturity at cutting, it’s by no means the last word in understanding the digestibility of this fiber fraction when eaten by the dairy cow or replacement heifer. The NDF fraction comprises the cell wall components, lignin, hemi-cellulose and cellulose.(See Figure 1.)

Do cows efficiently use their protein, or is it being wasted?

August 9, 2012
Daniel Luchini
Cows have a history of being easy targets for blame. Mrs. O’Leary’s cow was credited with starting the fire that burned down Chicago when she kicked an unfortunately placed lantern on Sunday, October 8, 1871. Now, some 140 years later, cows are being blamed for methane pollution and for the inefficient use of nitrogen in feedstuffs, an inefficiency tied to pollution from needlessly high levels of nitrogen in urine.

Amino acid balancing reduces dairy’s environmental impact

August 9, 2012
Elliot Block
Change is not always an easy concept to embrace. But for dairy producers and nutritionists willing to look at their rations in a new light, getting in on the leading edge of change with amino acid balancing offers environmental rewards as well as benefits in herd performance. That’s because dairy diets have long been formulated to oversupply protein in hopes of delivering adequate levels of limiting amino acids. While certainly understandable in theory, this practice has its drawbacks. It is:

How to evaluate bypass amino acid use

August 9, 2012
John Hibma
For over a decade, the importance and the value of balancing for specific amino acids in dairy cow diets has been a very hot topic. Amino acids play a direct role in a cow’s metabolism including milk production and milk protein synthesis. The challenge for researchers and scientists is figuring out which amino acids are the most important for producing milk and milk components and, most importantly, how any of this helps the dairy farmer make any money.

Measures of feeding economics: Focus on margins, not ratios

August 9, 2012
Greg Bethard
What is the best measure of feeding economics? There are a variety of ratios used in the dairy industry to evaluate feeding economics – and they are misleading or inaccurate if used inappropriately. Examples include milk price to feed price (USDA’s milk-to-feed ratio), dry matter intake to milk production (milk-to-feed) and feed cost per hundredweight (cwt).

Repairing milking parlor flooring: What are the options?

August 9, 2012
Mike Kramer
At first blush, the floors of milking parlors would seem to be one of the last areas of concern for dairymen. Typical milking parlor floors are generally concrete slabs designed to withstand the heavy loads of the milking cycle. Unfortunately, concrete is by no means the perfect long-term solution to safe, hygienic floors.

Remember, nutrition can impact udder health and SCC too

August 9, 2012
R. Tom Bass
Maintaining good udder health and low bulk tank somatic cell counts (SCC) is increasingly important to dairy profitability, particularly in light of the recent marketing requirement adopted by most milk processors to limit bulk tank SCC to a maximum of 400,000 cells per ml. Compliance with this new standard generally means that dairies must implement consistent and correct practices in a number of areas. A focus on clean cows, dry environments, proper udder prep and milking machine function, along with prudent monitoring, treatment and culling decisions, is commonly emphasized by herds with perennially low SCC.
