Q. What is your dairy background?
I grew up on the Rutter’s Dairy Farm in Pensylvania. It consisted of 100 head of registered Holsteins and Guernseys until the herd sold out in 2004.
All the Guernseys but the show herd were sold to Hoard's Dairyman, and the Holsteins were sold privately to herds in the area. The Guernsey heifers are still raised on the farm, and the cows are milked at another location. For the heifers, I am responsible for the mating decisions.
Q. In what area did you obtain a degree?
I graduated with a bachelor's of science in dairy science and a focus in statistics.

I grew up working on my uncle's dairy farm doing various tasks such as feeding calves and milking cows. I also showed dairy for seven years.
Q. In what area are you pursuing a degree?
I'm majoring in animal science with a dairy emphasis.
Solving the problem of greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural soil and developing more nutritious food for young children were the two winning topics in this year’s Alltech Young Scientist Program, announced at Alltech’s 28th Annual International Symposium.

Oregon's dairy industry seems to be bucking a trend that plagues other agricultural sectors nationwide.
While the average age of farmers in general is going up, there appears to be an influx of young dairy operators in Oregon that is slowing down the graying of the state's dairy farmers overall.
The enthusiasm of youth is helping the industry keep up with the times, both economically and environmentally.
My caller ID said the incoming line was phoning from Tennessee. Besides my friend Bill Maness, there’s only a few dairy folks that ever call me from the Volunteer State.

Independence Day comes with fireworks, parades, festivals, patriotic music and, at least for me, at my latitude, wheat harvesting. Combines empty their golden harvest into wagons and trailers.
Overflowing wagons and trailers parade along the highways to the mills and railheads proclaiming the wealth of the land. The sound of machinery fills the quiet rural scene.
When it comes to effective employee management, what’s the most important thing you can do to ensure you’re successful with your team? I’m sure we can all create a list of characteristics, concepts and techniques for effectively managing your workforce.
But it’s a lot simpler than that. So let’s start at the very beginning. The most important thing you can do to make employee management easier and more effective is to hire better employees. Yeah, you probably already knew that.
