This is my final report to you from South Sudan. I have traveled extensively in three of the 10 states: Western, Central and Eastern Equatoria state.
The bulk of my work has been what we call institutional building at the state ministries of agriculture and forestry. Generally, the Central Ministry in Juba (national) has two responsibilities: one, manage and allocate a budget and, two, set national policy.
Aurora Organic Dairy – a Boulder, Colorado-based business with operations in Weld County, including dairies near Platteville and Gill — held a grand opening this month for its new Little Calf Ranch Dairy near Eaton.
Aurora currently milks 1,200 cows, with that number expected to grow to about 2,000 in the future, according to an article in Windsor Now.
The EPA unveiled its new permit to regulate water runoff and pollution from some of Idaho's biggest cattle and dairy feedlot operators.
According to the Idaho Press-Tribune, the new general permit is years in the making and replaces a version that expired nine years ago.
The permit includes input from livestock producers concerned about onerous agency regulation and environmentalists watchdogging the industry and its impact on the health of streams, lakes and groundwater.
Earlier this month, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the appointment of 12 dairy members to the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board. Appointees’ terms were to begin immediately and will end Oct. 31, 2014.
"These appointees represent a cross section of the dairy industry and I am confident that the industry will be well served by them," said Vilsack.
Producers, processors and the urban community joined together to celebrate June Dairy Month at the 2012 Dairy Farmers of Oregon Milk Carton Boat Race held Sunday, June 10, at Westmoreland Casting Pond in Portland, Oregon.
Competitors paraded their creatively crafted showboats and raced the width of the pond on hand-made boats that floated entirely by milk cartons and milk jugs.
The pond was full of unique boats from the yellow brick road and Dorothy in the "Land of Oz" to the bicycle-powered “OS-CAR."

Background Q. What is your agricultural background? My dad had a 70-cow dairy farm until I was about 10. He had to sell his herd due to poor milk prices at the time.
After that I had a strong desire to one day help the dairy industry so another dairy farmer would not have to go through selling their life-long dream. I also enjoyed showing and judging dairy cattle at the fair throughout my entire life.
Q. In what area are you pursuing a degree? I am double majoring in life sciences communication and agricultural and applied economics. I plan to focus on agricultural marketing.
Individuals representing the public utility commission, the power grid, the Chesapeake Bay Commission and the dairy farm population were all in attendance at the most recent Pennsylvania Dairy Power Stakeholders roundtable discussion.
The meeting was held earlier this month and served as a platform for the group to discuss opportunities and obstacles to expanding renewable energy production on Pennsylvania dairy farms.

I was raised on my grandfather’s 160 acre dream in Mt. Airy, Maryland. My family runs Angus cattle and boar goats and raise corn, soy beans and hay. As a 4-Her I showed beef cattle, sheep, goats, hogs and one dairy heifer.

Q. What is your agricultural background?
I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to grow up in the agriculture industry. My family operates a beef cattle ranch in northern California, and I am involved with my grandparents’ Holstein dairy nearby. I also show and manage breeding decisions for my own group of registered Holsteins and Milking Shorthorns.
