California dairy industry groups honor Tiemersma family
After more than four and a half decades as a dairyman, Jelle Tiemersma – known as “Jim” to his friends – has built a lot of respect among his peers. But he didn’t realize quite how much until he and his family were named the 2012 Dairy Family of the Year by the Tulare County Dairy Women and the California Milk Advisory Board.
“It was a big surprise,” said Tiemersma, who – along with his wife, Tracy – founded the Tiemersma Dairy in 1971.

Southwest Dairy Farmers recognized with Texas AgriLife Extension Service award
The Texas AgriLife Extension Service announced a recent tribute to Southwest Dairy Farmers.

My dairy’s history: My great-grandfather started milking cows in 1941. My grandfather milked cows and farmed until his death in 1952. Overstreet Dairy was started in 1972 by my dad. In 2001, my dad and I formed a partnership.
Chobani Founder, President and CEO Hamdi Ulukaya was honored at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards for the New York area as the winner in the retail and consumer products category.
Ulukaya was selected as a leading entrepreneur by an independent judging panel made up of previous winners of the award, leading CEOs, private capital investors and other regional business leaders.
The winners were revealed at a gala on June 19 at the Marriott Marquis in New York City.

My dairy’s history: Our farm (Voegeli Brown Swiss) was homesteaded in 1854 by our Swiss predecessors. In 1895, my great-grandfather purchased a registered Brown Swiss and we have had registered Brown Swiss ever since.
Currently, the sixth generation is involved in operations at the farm. My mother Alice, brother Jimmy, myself and my two kids, Brienna and Christopher – along with a great work force – operate our farm.

New research from University of Missouri reproductive scientist Peter Sutovsky identifies faulty sperm and takes them out of the A.I. equation.
“There are many types of hidden sperm defects that are not obvious and cannot be identified by conventional analysis,” Sutovsky said.
“We look at biomarkers to improve our ability to correctly evaluate semen and to give us an idea about fertility of a bull that is used in an artificial insemination program.”
