Calf care is top priority at Pennsylvania dairy

November 18, 2010
If Sandy Weaver was an Olympic athlete, she’d be a gold medalist. If she was a singer, she’d be the reigning American Idol. As a calf raiser, she’s every bit as proud of her accomplishments. “In the past two years, my mortality rate has been 1.2 percent,” says the Pennsylvanian charged with rearing more than 400 newborn Holsteins annually. “I can’t even remember the last time we had a really sick one.”

Is the dairy industry nearing consensus?

November 12, 2010
I’m an eager reader of the Harvard Business Review. The business management magazine’s November issue focuses on leadership lessons managers can learn from the military. In an article titled, “Four Lessons in Adaptive Leadership,” Wharton professor and author Michael Useem says one essential leadership precept is to make good decisions. Easier said than done, right? But his explanation of how military leaders are taught to make good decisions seemed to make the task easier to do.

Be careful what you call it

November 12, 2010
The 1940 Republican candidate for president, Wendell Willkie, said, “A good catchword can obscure analysis for 50 years.” The name of a then-new program called “Social Security” made it harder to oppose. Do you oppose social security? Or, stated differently, by opposing Social Security are you promoting social insecurity? Catchwords can and do effectively keep us from focusing on what is really going on, and in the process we miss the real issues and opportunities for solutions.

It’s time to take care of your family… now

November 12, 2010
The clock is ticking, and time is running out. When was the last time you reviewed your living wills and trusts? Has your net worth increased or decreased? Perhaps you recently married or had a baby? Or perhaps you’ve divorced, or lost loved ones since you created your estate plan? All of these factors could have an impact on your existing estate plan.

How will the economic pieces fit together?

November 12, 2010
On the one hand, dairy markets seem susceptible to downward adjustment, with heavy cheese stocks, the imminent passing of the holiday demand season, and plenty of near-term production potential here in the United States. On the other hand, exports have been excellent and markets have generally stayed elevated for longer than expected. On the one hand, high grain prices seem likely to alter milk production potential and, with that, prices at some point in 2011. On the other hand, while $6-per-bushel corn and $13 per hundredweight milk cannot coexist for long, they can coexist for awhile.

Applying technology correctly can mean ‘big bucks’

November 12, 2010
Let’s consider for a moment what can happen when technology is either abused or not applied on your dairy. You can have all the knowledge in the world about certain cow topics and yet not get your point across. How is this possible? Let’s look at some examples to see how good technology can go awry. ‘More practice please’ Like many of you, I have enjoyed attending certain university- sponsored “Dairy Days”. Some great labor [labour]-saving devices have been designed that can mean more dollars for your dairy when applied properly.

Risk management marketing: ‘Is it me against them?’

November 12, 2010
Here’s another great, timely question overheard at a Lancaster, Pennsylvania, commodity marketing workshop taught by Stewart-Peterson advisers. Q. “How can I expect to compete and succeed in marketing today with so many fund managers, speculators and other outside investors entering the commodity markets?”
