Davis Dairy Plant: Providing more than just dairy products

June 8, 2012
Dario Martinez
Although South Dakota State University (SDSU) may be known for its diverse academic offerings and even its Hobo Day celebration, another source of recognition for the university is stemming from the dairy science program’s new dairy processing facility, Davis Dairy Plant. Construction of Davis Dairy Plant, located on SDSU’s campus in Brookings, South Dakota, concluded in the spring of 2011 and is currently producing a variety of dairy products.

Training program helps prepare future ultrasound technicians

June 8, 2012
Dario Martinez
According to a 2007 survey conducted by the USDA’s National Animal Health Monitoring System, someone other than a veterinarian performed approximately one-third of pregnancy exams on dairies in the West, and approximately one-quarter of exams on dairies with more than 500 cows nationally. With these survey results in mind, veterinarian Kevin McSweeney of Loveland, Colorado, began laying out the groundwork for a program to help train individuals in becoming ultrasound technicians.

How I tried to milk cows faster

June 8, 2012
Ron Timm
I grew up on a typical dairy farm in northeastern Wisconsin, where we milked 35 to 40 Holstein cows from 1940 through 1969. We were somewhat atypical in that we also raised potatoes for the commercial market and grew Scots Pine Christmas trees. In the ’50s, when I was a teenager, my father purchased a Surge bucket milking system.

June 8, 2012
Mike Gangwer
I am within three weeks of completing my six-month tour here in South Sudan. So begins the examination of what worked, what did not and where we could improve. The word “we” refers to the U.S. government. I am assigned to the U.S. embassy and fall under the staff of the ambassador.

Letter to the Editor: Hope is not a strategy

June 7, 2012
John Nye
Editor’s note: The following is an open letter to the dairy industry submitted by Utah dairyman John Nye. We have been in the dairy business for more than 30 years. Half of that time was spent on a typical New England freestall operation, the remaining time on a large Western purchased feed, drylot type of dairy.

What will you do for June Dairy Month on your farm?

June 6, 2012
Brenda Hastings
My husband, Lad, and I operate Hastings Dairy, which is located in northeast Ohio approximately 40 miles east of Cleveland and 20 miles south of Lake Erie. Our farm is in Geauga County, which is a rural agricultural county known for the fourth-largest Amish population in the world. Lad and I are third-generation dairy producers who started this farm in 2004.

Janeal Yancey: A fourth case of mad cow disease and still the safest food supply in the world

May 18, 2012
Janeal Yancey
The following excerpt is from Janeal Yancey’s blog, “Mom at the Meat Counter.” Yancey is a program technician and meat scientist at the University of Arkansas. She’s also a mom. Click here to visit her blog. As you may already know, a dairy cow in California was diagnosed with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as Mad Cow Disease. The 10-year-old cow died at an undisclosed dairy farm, and the disease was found when her body was sent to a rendering facility. Why am I not worried about this? First, the cow was not destined for our food supply. She was at a rendering facility. These are companies that dispose of dead animals and produce inedible products. There is a testing system set in place by the USDA to test the bodies of a certain number of the cows for BSE before they go through their process.

Mr. Chairman, Crop insurance is critical in next farm bill

May 18, 2012
On April 20, Chairman Frank Lucas wrapped up the House Agriculture Committee's field hearing series in Dodge City, Kansas. It was the final hearing that was held across the country to listen directly to producers on the ground and gather input in advance of writing the 2012 Farm Bill. Members heard from producers of a variety of commodities and beef about the tools they need to continue to produce a safe and affordable food and fiber supply. Witnesses explained that one of the goals of the Farm Bill should be to provide opportunities for effective risk management for all of agriculture. “As the witnesses explained today, agriculture is one of the few bright spots in America’s economy and yet still has room to grow. However, agricultural prosperity faces dangers that are both real and present. Overregulation from Washington directly threatens not only the continuity of our family farms, but also the existence of our way of life in rural America. Our farmers need to be freed from the regulatory grips of eager bureaucrats.”
