Cows need lots of water when temperatures outside get warmer.
From May to October, most cows will drink between 20 and 25 gallons of water every day (that’s about 165 to 185 pounds of water). If cows don’t have enough water, they cannot stay cool and they will not produce as much milk.
Cows that do not have enough water will also decrease the amount of feed they eat, making the problem of less milk production even worse.
To help with water intake, be sure to:
• have waterers in the shade
• have water available after milking
• keep waterers clean
• make sure there is plenty of room for cows to get a drink EL
