A new junior animal scientist program helps kids learn more about science and the animal world. Children ages 5 to 12 can explore science careers and study the lives of pets, farm animals and zoo animals. All junior animal scientists receive a full year subscription to Jr. Animal Scientist magazine. The magazine has great resources for learning at home or in the classroom:

  • Articles written just for kids to explain scientific concepts. The first issue focuses on the science of milk production. Future issues will focus on concepts like thermoregulation and genetics.
  • Full-color photographs and graphics to illustrate the science. Kids can see how scientific research is relevant in their lives.
  • Articles about scientists with interesting careers. The first issue of the magazine includes a profile of Jeff Ettling, a herpetologist who works at the Saint Louis Zoo.
  • Activity pages that reinforce scientific concepts from previous articles. These pages also complement classroom lessons on animals, science and agriculture.
  • Do-it-yourself activities where students can see science in action.

Junior animal scientists can also access a special section of AnimalSmart.org, which features extra articles about animal science and graphics that complement articles in the magazine. Click here to visit the Kids' Zone section.

Although educational resources are the main feature of the junior animal scientist program, members also receive a junior animal scientist water bottle and backpack.

Parents and educators can click here to sign up for the program. Educators can also order the Jr. Animal Scientist magazine at a reduced rate. PD
