Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) is proud to return as a sponsor of Dietitians of Canada’s Nutrition Month. The annual March commemoration celebrates food and healthy eating, shining a spotlight on the role of dietitians in providing effective, credible nutrition guidance to Canadians.

This year, DFC’s campaign focuses on how dairy can play a role in healthy, sustainable diets. Recipes and educational resources have been created for Canadian dietitians, while a consumer campaign extends the theme and highlights Canadian dairy farmers’ commitment to managing resources responsibly for future generations.

DFC’s own dietitians are excited to help Canadians celebrate the potential of healthy eating by providing ideas and strategies to support sustainable diets.

Dairy farm virtual tours for undergraduate nutrition students

DFC has offered virtual dairy farm tours for undergraduate nutrition students over the past several years featuring live interactions from farmers and related experts streamed directly into university lecture halls across the country. The 2022 tours involved 500 participants, and the program is continuing in 2023.

Students attending these events learn about technology use on dairy farms, as well as animal care and feeding practices, quality standards and sustainability practices. The interactive tours engage students as they hear from real local farmers describing their workday and get answers to their questions about dairy farming in Canada from farmers, dietitians and sustainability experts.

In their future roles in the health sector, undergraduate nutrition students may be called upon to share information on the production of dairy and the sustainability efforts behind it. Tour participants enjoy this unique sneak peek into real-world dairy farming and offer very positive feedback.

“The main message I took away from the tour was that the dairy farms have high standards for the quality of their milk and are taking initiative to improve the environmental effect of milk production on farms,” says one attendee.

New Dairy Farmers of Canada campaign highlights energy management on Canadian dairy farms

In February, DFC launched a new consumer-facing marketing campaign. The campaign continues to build confidence in Canadian dairy by highlighting the energy management practices undertaken by farms across the country.

The ads, running nationwide across digital and traditional media platforms until March 26, feature many of the tangible steps farmers are taking in this area, from energy conservation and efficiency improvements to using renewable energy sources (wind, solar and bioenergy).

These practices further reinforce the sector’s longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship behind the Blue Cow Quality Milk logo. It also shows Canadian consumers how offsetting carbon emissions is a serious part of the ongoing work to get to net zero by 2050.
