As far back as the late 1970s and early 1980s, we discovered that long-day photoperiods of 16 hours of daylight and eight hours of darkness increased milk yield in lactating dairy cows by an average of 7 to 16 percent (2 to 3 kilograms). Several researchers have confirmed this data over the last 20 years. A well-lit barn can also improve the farmer’s workplace safety and mood. Humans feel better and work harder in a well-lit barn. If you are looking to expand or update your facilities, now would be a good time to invest in proper lighting.

Keep cooling in mind, even as temperatures drop

We may be enjoying some cooler weather, but for our high-producing dairy cows, the temperature is still running plenty warm for peak production. DeLaval sells 10,000th VMS to Ontario farm

DeLaval recently sold its 10,000th Voluntary Milking System (VMS) to Glenirvine Farms in Fergus, Ontario. As a pioneer of automated milking systems, the company obtained its first voluntary milking patent in 1982, and through a subsidiary company installed on-farm milking robots in Holland in the early 1990s.

This new dairy research facility at the Elora Research Station is a joint project involving the Agricultural Research Institute of Ontario (ARIO), the university and Ontario dairy industry stakeholders.

Dairy Farmers of Nova Scotia reaffirms quota cap policy

At a Dairy Farmers of Nova Scotia (DFNS) special members meeting Aug. 2, the 176 licensed producers present overwhelmingly passed a motion to reaffirm support of the quota cap policy and direct the board to rescind its decision to remove the cap. The motion passed 163 to two; only one person abstained.
