The New Year is known for new beginnings and fresh starts. Usually, it is met with much optimism and hope that disappointments of the past will be turned around and goals will be realized.  

Losing a calf can add stress both mentally and financially to your operation. Here are a few considerations to prepare for a successful calving season.

Finding information about meat isn’t really hard. If you’re involved and interested in the livestock sector, it is likely reflected in your news and social media feeds. You’re inundated with content about beef and other animal-sourced foods through social media, podcasts, newsletters and even face-to-face conversations.

Beef production forecast for fourth-quarter 2022 is raised by 70 million pounds on higher expected total cattle slaughter, along with slightly heavier carcass weights. Total 2022 beef production is projected at 28.4 billion pounds, an increase of nearly 2% from 2021.

U.S. beef production is poised to end 2022 with another record in total output, as January through October federally inspected slaughtered beef hit 23.25 billion pounds – a 1.9% increase over the same 10-month period from 2021’s record production.

Every year, just before the first game of the season but a couple of weeks after the start of practice, the Oakley High School girls’ basketball team holds an annual potato fundraiser. As one of the coaches of the junior varsity part of said team, I am privileged to take part in the dreaded festivities.
