Free book on workplace mediation

October 24, 2011
Mediators, human resource managers and other interested individuals may obtain a free copy of the 321-page book Party-Directed Mediation by Gregorio Billikopf of the University of California. The focus of the publication is on the mediation of deep-seated interpersonal conflict, so the book may also be of interest to attorneys and therapists. In Party-Directed Mediation the author shares two models: (1) the first deals with contention between co-workers; and (2) the second; for handling differences between supervisors and subordinates.

Fluid milk sales head for 25-year low: Is anyone watching?

October 11, 2011
John Kaczor
USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service calculates and reports U.S. sales of fluid milk products on a monthly basis, using Federal Order and CDFA data to arrive at a total they believe to represent 92 percent of total U.S. sales. They estimate the remaining 8 percent of sales by using population data for areas not included in the two data series.

Is it a good time to buy or sell agricultural land?

October 11, 2011
Curtis Talley
A number of factors have come together to provide unique circumstances that may be beneficial to both buyers and sellers of agricultural land: Strong demand for land, interest rates at almost all-time lows and long-term federal capital gains tax rates not seen since 1933 are all involved. Let’s take a look at these factors. Demand for land Interest in farmland is rising globally. Population growth, rising incomes and migration from rural areas to urban locations is driving demand for food products, oilseed and livestock.

Lessons learned from a good-looking dairy job gone bad

October 11, 2011
Harley Wagenseller
Is it possible that you can be a loyal employee to a great company but yet feel that you don’t want to work there any longer? This happened several years ago to an acquaintance of mine. I would like to relate what happened to him to see if there are any life lessons we can learn. Some years ago, my friend applied for a herdsman position on a 500-cow dairy. The farm visit went well, as both parties asked questions back and forth.

What are you looking for in people?

October 11, 2011
Tom Wall
When it comes to hiring a new employee, what are the top three traits you’re looking for? Do these traits differ between entry-level positions and middle management? And finally, how did you decide which traits are most important? The desired characteristics for choosing employees is probably almost endless, so I won’t bother trying to provide a comprehensive list of possible choices. And I also won’t claim that there are any right or wrong answers to the above questions (although I’m a huge fan of trustworthy, productive and disciplined) ... that’s up to you to decide.

How does the Chinese consumer impact me?

October 11, 2011
Amanda Miller
In 2008, the Chinese government said it would like to increase the recommended daily intake of dairy protein per Chinese citizen from 100g to 300g. Can you guess how many more dairy cows would be needed in China to meet that need? It would be the equivalent of 65 million additional lactating dairy cows in China. What would those numbers look like if we were in the U.S., using higher-producing, more efficient cows? Only 12 million more cows would be needed. I hope when you read those numbers, the first word that comes to your mind is “opportunity” for our dairy industry.

Make the right kind of investments

October 11, 2011
Ben Yale
A giant statue of a warrior on horseback stands in the place de Jaude, the central square in Clermont-Ferrand, France. This is no figure sitting on a stationary horse, but of a man with sword drawn, the horse in full gallop. The image is so vivid it is easy to imagine it rapidly moving on. Sculpted by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, known to Americans as the man who designed the Statute of Liberty, the great rider is Versingetorix, (vers-n-ge-to-rex) “Great Warrior King,” a man that united the Gallic tribes (in what is now more or less France, Switzerland, Austria and Germany) against a foreign invader.

DAIReXNET fall webinars begin with human resource management

September 27, 2011
DAIReXNET is hosting a webinar titled “Human Resource Management: Being a Boss or Building Relationships.” The webinar is free to the public and is geared toward bringing pertinent information to extension educators, allied industry professionals, veterinarians and dairy producers across the U.S. The air quality webinar will be held Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. EDT. Dr. Bob Milligan, Cornell University Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management professor emeritus and senior consultant at Dairy Strategies, LLC, will introduce you to the current thinking in human resource management. Current research substantiates that great leaders and supervisors focus on relationship building, communication, clarity and feedback rather than command and control.

Using appropriate accounting tools to harvest information

September 22, 2011
Paul Campbell
Farming operations require the use of a number of tools. Some tools are used continually while others, though no less valuable, are held in reserve to be used on an as-needed basis. Over the years, there has been great progress made in the design and functionality of many valuable tools. One area that has seen considerable progress is the use of electronics. Modern tractors utilize integrated computer systems with GPS technology which can allow the tractors to literally drive themselves. In recent years, there has been a paradigm shift towards smartphones and other handheld devices.

Simplifying the system to find the money

September 21, 2011
Ben Yale
When I designed my office, the first plans came back bid at about two times more than I had budgeted. I called in a long-time friend who was a builder. I went over the plans and pointed to areas where I thought I could cut costs – more siding, less brick, for example.
