Study shows dairy cows prefer LED lights

April 27, 2012
A study overseen by Oklahoma State University (OSU) found that cows at one of the dairy farms in that state produced 6 percent more milk when LED lights were used compared with cows under fluorescent lights. LED technology, which stands for light-emitting diode, uses semiconductor chips to convert electricity. LEDs are more energy efficient than either incandescent bulbs or fluorescent lights. The discovery was not the main focus of the OSU study.

FDA working with animal, drug and medical communities to promote judicious antimicrobial use

April 27, 2012
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced April 11 that it is taking three steps to promote the judicious use of medically important antibiotics in food-producing animals. Based on a consideration of relevant reports and scientific data, FDA is proposing a voluntary initiative to phase in certain changes to how medically important antimicrobial drugs are labeled and used in food-producing animals.

MSU to begin work on energy-producing anaerobic digester

April 27, 2012
Michigan State University (MSU) is poised to begin work on a new anaerobic digester, a system that will not only help re-use waste from MSU’s farms and dining halls but also will create energy for some on-campus buildings. At its April 13 meeting, the MSU Board of Trustees authorized the administration to begin work on the project, an approximately $5 million venture that should pay for itself in less than 15 years.

Traveling road show targets heat stress

April 27, 2012
Dario Martinez
Heat stress causes losses in several areas on dairy farms across the country during the summer months – in addition to milk production losses. In order to help producers mitigate the negative effects of heat stress on dairy cattle, the Dairy Heat Stress Road Show program was created well in advance of 2012’s summer months. The road show took place in four locations throughout the southern U.S. and one location in Puerto Rico, making its debut last December in Florida. The remaining three stops of the road show took place in early April, with the last stop taking place in Tulare, California, on April 6.

What is involved in getting a nutritious, quality food product to your dinner table? More than the average consumer realizes. This is a national effort focused on protecting small businesses and American jobs from the negative impacts of regulations recently proposed by the Obama Administration.

April 27, 2012
Karen Lee
The room looked like church on Christmas with extra chairs set up in the aisles and a group congregated outside the door in hopes of catching the presentation. The topic was “Housing and Management Practices Fit for a Healthy Calf.” This well-attended session was one of four workshops to kick-off the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) Business Conference March 13-14 in Madison, Wisconsin.

Legislation introduced to block Dept. of Labor from barring youth from farm work

April 27, 2012
Congressman Tom Latham (R-Iowa) introduced bipartisan legislation in early March in the U.S. Congress that will block Washington’s attack on America’s long-standing family farm tradition. Latham’s bill blocks recent attempts by the Department of Labor, with moral support from the Department of Agriculture, to increase federal regulatory involvement into family farms that risk outlawing farm youth from working on their family owned farms. “The family farm is one of Iowa’s most cherished traditions and a cornerstone of our state and nation’s economy and cultural history,” Congressman Latham said.

3 Open Minutes with Western Growers

April 27, 2012
Walt Cooley
A new poll showed more than 70 percent of likely voters supported a national guest worker program for farm laborers, if such a program included various provisions. Western Growers, an association representing farmers in Arizona and California, whose members produce more than half of the nation’s fresh fruits and vegetables, commissioned the new poll. Progressive Dairyman Editor Walt Cooley discussed the survey results with Ken Barbic (top far right), a Washington, D.C.-based lobbyist for Western Growers, and Brian Nienaber (top right), vice president of the Terrance Group, the national polling firm that conducted the poll.
