New website connects buyers and sellers of bulk feed ingredients

Livestock producers have a new tool to save time and reduce costs when buying bulk feed ingredients. A newly launched website, www.feedpail.com, is designed to connect buyers and sellers of bulk feed ingredients quickly and easily. Dairy producers, as well as other bulk feed buyers, now have direct access to the feed ingredients they need through Feedpail, a free service that allows users to see prices and availability of more than 50 bulk feed ingredients.

Dr. Mario Lopez, an employee of DeLaval, was recently appointed to a three-year term on the board of the National Mastitis Council (NMC). In this position, Dr. Lopez will help steer NMC directives. Board members of Midwest Dairy Association have elected officers at the corporate and division levels. Jerry Messer (chairman), Allen Merrill (vice chairman) and Bill Siebenborn (first vice chairman) will extend their service. New members elected include: Kristine Spadgenske, Minnesota; Gerrit Davelaar, Iowa; Doug Nuttelman, Nebraska; and Byron Lehman, Kansas.

New research highlights benefits of oxygen barrier film

New research continues to show that the use of oxygen barrier films protects feedstuffs better than standard plastic coverings. Experiments to compare the effects of oxygen barrier films on the composition and losses from the upper layers of ensiled crops were carried out by a trio of European research institutions, in conjunction with Silostop.

Cowtown Holsteins Derby Line, Vermont Online news outlet Vtdigger.org quoted dairy producer Doug Nelson in an April 15 article about declining milk prices and dairy policy. Nelson’s 3,000-head Cowtown Holsteins is the largest dairy operation in Vermont. University of Delaware’s UDairy Creamery KWWL, a news station serving eastern Iowa, acknowledged Jacob Hunt of Newton, Iowa, for his membership on the University of Delaware’s UDairy Creamery student management team.

Colorado dairy exports up 80 percent

May 3, 2012
Colorado agricultural exports grew more than 25 percent during the first two months of this year vs. the same period in 2011, said the state Department of Agriculture. Exports grew $45 million to more than $222 million, according to the agriculture department. The growth, led by meat and dairy exports, marked the fourth consecutive annual increase.

Kansas Dairy Ingredients to build new plant

May 3, 2012
In mid-April, Kansas Dairy Ingredients announced its plans to build a dairy ingredient and cheese plant in Hugoton, Kansas. The company will start construction on the facility in May and begin Phase I operation in the fourth quarter of this year. The facility will be positioned to expand in 2013 to add cheese production.

McLanahan has recently introduced roll press technology to its line of rotary liquid-solid separation equipment. The roll press will complement the operation of rotary separators by offering dairy producers an alternative to screw press technology for dewatering manure solids.

These treatment books help producers comply with FDA record keeping requirements and avoid regulatory action in case of an accidental residue violation. New items include #1636 Dairy Treatment Record book and #1637 Calf Treatment Record book.
