InFocus: Lely opens new manufacturing facility in Iowa

Lely, a leading manufacturer in robotic milking systems, celebrated the expansion of their company by opening the doors to their first North American facility in Pella, Iowa, March 28-30. The event featured a broad range of activities for producers and media including guest speakers Alexander van der Lely, CEO of Lely Group; Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad; Mary Andringa, CEO of the Vermeer Corporation; and Peter Longebeeke, president of Lely USA. Farm Bill passes Senate ag committee, dairy industry leaders testify

April 26, 2012
The Senate Agriculture Committee met April 26 to markup a draft of the 2012 farm bill. When it concluded, it passed a bill titled the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2012. The bill contains major elements of the Dairy Security Act, introduced last fall by Reps. Collin Peterson (D-Minnesota) and Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), including a margin insurance program that replaces existing dairy programs, namely the MILC and Dairy Product Price Support programs.

American Agri-Women heading to Washington, D.C., to deliver ag policy positions

April 26, 2012
American Agri-Women (AAW) recently drafted resolutions to address issues and threats to agriculture. Representatives from this all-volunteer coalition of more than 50,000 farm, ranch and agribusiness women will deliver these resolutions to elected officials in Washington, D.C., in early June. The group’s resolutions, which are reviewed each spring, cover ag business and economics, commodities and natural resources.

New Illinois directory will connect producers with custom manure applicators

April 26, 2012
Producers will soon have a way to contact custom manure applicators, said Dale Baird, working with the University of Illinois Extension Certified Livestock Manager program. “Extension is developing a new resource, the Illinois Custom Manure Applicators Directory. A significant amount of livestock manure from large-scale livestock operations is custom applied in Illinois.

Market recovering from discovery of BSE case in California

April 26, 2012
The initial upset over Tuesday's announcement of the first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in the U.S. in six years has started to subside. A dairy cow at a rendering facility in California was determined to have the disease based on samples sent to the USDA National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa.

Idaho loses one of its great dairy leaders

April 26, 2012
Highly respected dairyman and advocate for the Idaho dairy industry Dr. Bill Stouder, DVM, of Buhl, Idaho, ended his 13-month battle with cancer on March 30 and passed away at home at the age of 70. He was born on September 21, 1941, in Huntington Park, California, the son of Russell LaVon and Vera Belle Williams Stouder.

Gracious dairy farm hosts and warm, sunny weather welcomed 128 students to southern Virginia for the 11th annual Dairy Challenge. The 2012 contest, which was hosted by Virginia Tech and North Carolina State University, attracted dairy students from 32 colleges across the U.S. and Canada.

New York Senator pushes measure to help local dairy farmers meet yogurt demand

April 20, 2012
Proposed federal legislation would give dairy farmers tax credits and savings incentives to keep up with the booming upstate New York yogurt industry. New York leads the U.S. in production of Greek-style yogurt, which requires three times the amount of milk than regular yogurt. Several firms have already opened or are planning large new Greek-style yogurt plants from Fulton County to Western New York.
