EXCEDE approved for metritis treatment in two doses

Pfizer Animal Health announced that EXCEDE (ceftiofur crystalline free acid) Sterile Suspension is now approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of acute postpartum metritis in just two doses. This new approval for EXCEDE represents a major step forward in modernizing metritis treatment options. For the industry to continue to improve the rate of meat drug residues found pre-slaughter in cull dairy cows, there is a need for on-label solutions that effectively treat metritis while also offering the assurance of residue risk avoidance.

Ag-Bag releases MX1012 commercial silage bagger

April 13, 2012
In March, at a dealer meeting in Madison, Wisconsin, Ag-Bag introduced the MX1012 commercial silage bagger. Each attendee had the opportunity to climb aboard the machine and speak with the design and marketing team about the MX1012’s features. Taylor Weisensel, national sales manager for Ag-Bag, said, “There is a segment of the market, in the 150- to 750-head dairy operations, where we had a product line gap. Today, we are fully meeting the silage bagging needs of all sizes of dairy operations with the launch of the MX1012 commercial silage bagger.”

California dairy families award more than $1.4 million to struggling elementary schools

April 12, 2012
The California Milk Advisory Board (CMAB), representing California’s dairy families, announced the award of more than $1.4 million in cash, books and school supply prizes to elementary schools in southern California as part of the Real Seal Appeal! sweepstakes drawing. Elementary schools in 10 southern California counties participated in the sweepstakes, which reached more than 42,000 teachers in 99 districts with information about healthy eating for students and families. Participants collected Real California Milk seals from milk and dairy products to enter the drawing.

National DHIA resolution seeks plan for quality genetic, management information

April 12, 2012
Delegates attending the National Dairy Herd Information Association’s (DHIA) 47th annual meeting March 8 in Fort Worth, Texas, unanimously adopted a resolution to thank dairy industry partners, including DHIA, Purebred Dairy Cattle Association (PDCA), National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB) and their member organizations. These groups spent countless hours working on behalf of the dairy industry to ensure the availability of high quality genetic evaluations and management tools in the future.

National DHIA names 21 scholarship winners

The National Dairy Herd Information Association (DHIA) Scholarship Committee selected 21 high school seniors and college students as recipients of $750 scholarships. Judges evaluated applicants on scholastic achievements, leadership in school and community activities, and responses to DHI- and career-related questions.

57th South Dakota Dairy Princess crowned

April 11, 2012
Olivia Siglin of Webster is South Dakota’s 57th State Dairy Princess. She was crowned in Sioux Falls during the Central Plains Dairy Expo. Siglin, 18, is the daughter of Kevin Siglin and Patty Siglin and is a student at South Dakota State University majoring in agriculture education and agriculture business. Throughout the coming year, she will represent South Dakota dairy farmers at a variety of appearances, helping consumers to understand how milk is produced in a wholesome and responsible way. She receives a $1,000 scholarship from Midwest Dairy Association’s South Dakota Division. Christina Maher, 18, Nunda, was named runner-up. Her parents are Rae Lynn and Phillip Maher and she is a student at Lake Area Technical College in Watertown with a major in large animal technician and dairy. She was awarded a $500 scholarship from the Central Plains Dairy Expo.

Daily market update has a fresh look

After 14 years of being published by the Chicago-based market exchange company CME Group, the Daily Dairy Report is under new management. Mary Ledman, a market commentator with more than 30 years experience in the dairy industry, has assumed ownership of the Daily Dairy Report, which will be re-launched as a subscription publication May 1. “The report will continue to provide timely market information while expanding its scope and impact,” says Ledman.

Meijer acquires Bareman’s Dairy plant in Michigan

April 10, 2012
Meijer, the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based retailer, has acquired plant operations at Bareman’s Dairy, a local family-owned company based in Holland, Michigan. The new Purple Cow Creamery, named after the ice cream shops inside many Meijer stores, will produce white and chocolate milk in gallon and half-gallon sizes for the 101 Meijer stores located in Michigan.

Governor Cuomo announces aid for New York's storm-hit farms

April 10, 2012
Governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced that an additional $1 million in recovery aid will be provided to New York farms that were affected by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. These funds are Round 2 of the Farm Operation Match Component of the Agriculture and Community Recovery Fund (ACRF). Grants will go to 97 farms in 18 counties to help replace feed and crops that were damaged by Irene or Lee. The first round of grants awarded $1.3 million to 143 farms in 21 counties.

New DuPont Acapela fungicide receives PMRA registration The Pesticide Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) in Canada has granted approval for registration for DuPont Acapela fungicide. Acapela is a flexible fungicide with a new active ingredient that employs unique movement properties to fit the way producers farm. It controls key leaf diseases, allowing growers to achieve higher yields in cereals, corn, soybeans and pulse crops. "Acapela has unique movement properties that differentiate it from other fungicides," says Dave Kloppenburg, fungicide launch manager for DuPont. "It moves across the waxy layer of the leaf surface and systemically within leaf tissues."
