Holstein Association USA recognizes seven as 2012 Herds of Excellence

Seven U.S. registered Holstein breeders have earned the distinction of being named 2012 Holstein Association USA Herds of Excellence. The award was created to pay tribute to breeders who have bred and raised cattle that are consistently performing at the highest levels. To be recognized with this honor, herds must be 25 percent above breed average Mature Equivalent (ME) for milk, fat and protein; have classified within the last year and have an actual average classification score of 83 points or higher; have at least 70 percent of the herd homebred; and be enrolled in the Association’s TriStar production records program.

Industry Honor Roll, May 30: Young dairypeople recognized through elections, contests, scholarships

Princess Kay finalists named in Minnesota This year’s finalists for the title of Princess Kay of the Milky Way have been named. Princess Kay is crowned each year the night before the state fair opens. Twelve young women from dairy farm backgrounds were selected after a three-day event for county dairy princesses held in St. Joseph, Minnesota. The finalists are Kelsey Buss, Valerie Grimm, Victoria Haler, Meg Hintzen, Kirsten Meier, Laura Mesenburg, Kelsey Mussman, Elizabeth Nix, Christine Reitsma, Laura Rosenhammer, Aly Schwartau and Maggie Stiles. —From Midwest Dairy Association news release North Dakota dairy producers to lead AMPI Young Cooperators Mark and Angie Qual, dairy farmers from Lisbon, North Dakota, were elected the 2012 Young Cooperator (YC) chairpersons for Midwest dairy cooperative Associated Milk Producers, Inc. Kansas researcher awarded $250,000 to develop mastitis treatment

May 30, 2012
A leading researcher at Kansas State University has been awarded $250,000 from the Center for Animal Health Innovation's (CAHI) Proof-of-Concept (PoC) seed funding program. Tonatiuh Melgarejo, DVM, PhD, an associate professor at Kansas State University and the principal investigator, will receive the seed funding to assist in the development of a novel class of natural antibiotics for the treatment of mastitis in dairy cattle. In addition to the financial award, Dr. Melgarejo will receive guidance from CAHI's animal health industry-led board of directors to help bring the technology to market.

Michael and Steve MacLaren Plainfield, Vermont Brothers and third-generation dairy farmers Michael and Steve MacLaren have been receiving national news coverage for closing their dairy farm, which – until recently – was the last one still milking in Plainfield, Vermont. Anderson-Wise is new Dairy Council of California CEO

Tammy Anderson-Wise has been named chief executive officer of Dairy Council of California (Dairy Council of CA) by the organization’s producer-distributor board of directors. Anderson-Wise was formerly director of program services for Dairy Council of CA, managing its school programs. She has been with the organization 15 years. She replaces Peggy Biltz, who is retiring after spending 27 years with Dairy Council of CA, 22 as chief executive officer.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has announced the selection of Rochelle Ripp of Lodi as Wisconsin’s 65th Alice in Dairyland. The announcement was made at the Finale Program in Grant County following three days of interviews, speeches, agri-business tours and an impromptu question and answer session.
