Novus International’s C.O.W.S. Program makes steps forward

Not even six months after Novus International, Inc. fully launched its C.O.W.S. program, industry interest and acceptance of the service targeting cow comfort have exceeded expectations. Novus looks at the industry’s response as a signal that dairy producers are concerned about cow comfort on their farms and are looking for means of improvement. “C.O.W.S. is an exclusive program that has been tested and proven to work,” says Stephanie Gable, global marketing manager with Novus. “When cows are comfortable and healthy, they will perform better. We are confident C.O.W.S. helps our dairy customers – and the industry as a whole – achieve even greater levels of efficiency and productivity that will enhance overall sustainability.”

Pfizer Animal Health, American Association of Bovine Practitioners award 23 veterinary students with scholarships

September 28, 2011
Pfizer Animal Health and the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Foundation announced that 23 veterinary medicine students received financial support through the 2011 AABP Foundation – Pfizer Animal Health Veterinary Student Scholarship Fund. This year, the AABP Foundation and Pfizer Animal Health presented 23 students from across the nation with a $5,000 scholarship at the AABP Annual Conference held Sept. 21 to 24 in St. Louis, Missouri. Travel and lodging costs also were provided to the scholarship recipients to attend the AABP Annual Conference. In the last three years, the AABP Foundation – Pfizer Animal Health Veterinary Student Scholarship Fund has awarded $315,000 in scholarships to 63 veterinary students.

The Center for Dairy Excellence Board of Directors is seeking nominations for the 2011 Pacesetter Award. The award was developed by the Pennsylvania Dairy Stakeholders to promote and encourage a progressive dairy industry in Pennsylvania. The award became part of the Center for Dairy Excellence's programs in 2011, with the integration of the stakeholders and the center.

The Wisconsin Holstein Association’s (WHA) Young Adult Committee will be offering monetary awards for young adults to attend educational events in 2012. There will be four $500 awards given to WHA members, ages 21-45.

Horizon is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2011 and reflecting on its growth from a small organic yogurt brand to not only the top-selling organic milk brand in the U.S., but the top-selling milk brand, conventional or organic. “Over the past 20 years, Horizon has grown its network of family farmers from seven to more than 600, and helped create and grow the organic dairy category,” said Mike Ferry, Horizon president. “While we are proud to celebrate these achievements throughout our 20th anniversary year, we are also marking the occasion by reaffirming our commitment to sustainable agriculture, to advancing the organic movement and to our family farmer partners.”

University of Wisconsin-Madison dominates national dairy judging contest

September 26, 2011
The 18th Annual Accelerated Genetics Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest was held Sept. 18 in Viroqua, Wisconsin, with the University of Wisconsin – Madison taking top honors in reasons and overall. The University of Wisconsin – Madison team, coached by Chad Wethal and Brian Kelroy, included team members: Abbey Wethal, Mitch Kappelman, Ryan O’Leary and Genevieve Dryak. They took home the coveted Brown Swiss Canton III Traveling Trophy. Placing second overall at this year’s contest was the University of Wisconsin – River Falls, coached by Sandra Sawall and Steve Kelm. Team members: Ami Cooper, Sara Larson, Labecca Johnson and Nathan Laska. Rounding out the top three teams was the University of Minnesota in third place, coached by Les Hansen, Scott Ellinghuysen and Alicia Thurk. Team members: David Hanson, Jacob Achen, Jayne Esch and Isaac Salfer.

Ireland’s Dairymaster triples U.S. footprint to meet growing demand

Dairymaster, an Ireland-based manufacturer and supplier of advanced automated milking, feeding, cooling, slurry and heat detection equipment to dairy farms worldwide, announced that it has tripled its U.S. footprint by moving to a new facility in Cincinnati. The additional space equips the company to meet growing demand from U.S. dairy producers for its high-performance equipment. Fueling the growth is widespread adoption of Dairymaster’s Select Detect product by dairy producers in the U.S. and Canada. Select Detect is a detection and fertility monitoring system that is sold exclusively in the U.S. by Select Sires Inc., the largest A.I. company in North America.
