Pagel’s Ponderosa hosts Ag Career Days

More than 1,000 junior high school students attended Ag Career Days at Pagel’s Ponderosa Dairy in Casco, Wisconsin, to learn about the breadth of agricultural job opportunities in Kewaunee County. Situated between Green Bay and Lake Michigan, this rural area boasts more cows than people, earning its status as one of the nation’s top 50 dairy-producing counties. In fact, one out of every four jobs is directly related to agriculture in Kewaunee County.

Managing heat stress to protect dairy cattle immune function and productivity

Speaking at a pre-conference symposium sponsored by Prince Agri Products Inc. at the 25th annual Florida Ruminant Nutrition Symposium in Gainesville, Dr. Robert Collier, professor at the University of Arizona Agricultural Research Center, said heat-stressed dairy cows may experience increased levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, which can weaken their natural immune system and make them more susceptible to disease and infection.

As the first shovels of dirt were turned at the groundbreaking ceremony for the New Holland Pavilions at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin, the countdown also began. From that moment on April 11, there are 158 days for construction crews to complete the new 290,000-square-foot pavilions by mid-September, just in time for World Dairy Expo, Sept. 30 through Oct. 4.

Sometimes producers may feel a little tied up, just like the man bound with red tape depicted in the picture that Kevin Abernathy, director of regulatory affairs for the Milk Producers Council, pointed to on his slide presentation. There’s a lot of red tape when it comes to California’s regulatory affairs, he said. The challenge for producers is managing the tape so they can move around.
