U.S. and China resolve dairy certificate negotiations

January 23, 2013
The National Milk Producers Federation praised the successful resolution of negotiations with China on an import dairy certificate, a measure that provides certainty to U.S. dairy exporters in order to enhance U.S.-China dairy trade. U.S. and China government officials have been negotiating a new certificate for nearly three years, since China revised its requirements under the dairy certificate in the first part of 2010.

Sen. Reid re-introduces previous Senate farm bill

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid is promising to act this year on legislation that went nowhere in the last Congress, including a five-year farm bill. In a Jan. 22 speech on the Senate floor, Reid said the Senate would consider a farm bill, as well as other measures that the House didn't pass.

Southeastern dairy farmers to receive $158.6 million settlement

January 22, 2013
Law firm BakerHostetler has announced the third and final settlement agreement with the remaining defendants in the Southeast Milk Antitrust Litigation. Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) and the remaining defendants in the lawsuit that claims violation of federal antitrust laws have reached a settlement agreement with the certified class of Southeastern dairy farmers across 14 states totaling $158,600,000.

New vaccine against Streptococcus uberis

January 22, 2013
The USDA has recently licensed a new vaccine for reducing mastitis caused by Streptococcus uberis, giving dairies an option for proactively minimizing environmental streptococcal mastitis. According to the news release, Streptococcus Uberis Bacterin has been tested on commercial dairies with a history of elevated somatic cell counts (BTSCC and SCC) and isolation of environmental streptococcus species (e.g. Streptococcus uberis) from milk samples.

Zetor re-launches Major Series utility tractors

Zetor North America, Inc. is re-launching its Major Series of value-priced utility tractors in the U.S. and Canada. Initially, the new Major will be available in an 80-horsepower, four-wheel-drive cab version, with 60 horsepower, 70-horsepower, two-wheel drive and cabriolet (open station) models to be added later.

Pfizer Animal Health unit seeks $2.2 billion in IPO

January 21, 2013
Zoetis Inc., the animal-health unit of Pfizer Inc., is seeking as much at $2.2 billion in an initial public offering. Pfizer is offering 86.1 million shares for $22 to $25 each, Zoetis said Jan. 17 in a regulatory filing. The midpoint of the range would value the New Jersey-based company at $11.8 billion, or about 26 times earnings in the 12 months through Sept. 30.
