Organic Pastures sues FDA over interstate ban of raw milk

January 4, 2013
Organic Pastures, the nation’s largest raw milk dairy, has launched a lawsuit against the FDA for allegedly turning its back on the dairy’s request for the agency to change its current law banning sales of raw milk across state lines. The Fresno-based dairy submitted its request to the agency back in December 2008.

Names in the News: Skip Hardie

January 3, 2013
Q&A with New York dairyman Skip Hardie, who was interviewed for an NBC "Nightly News" segment about the legislative "dairy cliff" that was threatening to raise the retail price of milk as high as $8 per gallon. Clips from Hardie's interview also aired on "The Today Show." Click here to view the NBC "Nightly News" video or here for "The Today Show" segment. Why did you consent to do the interview? I thought it was very important for consumers to hear a dairy farmer's viewpoint on this possible "dairy cliff."

Dairy Farm Safety Short Courses from University of Minnesota Extension

January 2, 2013
While all farm types have hazards, dairy farms have added hazards to which workers are exposed every day – livestock, machinery, wet surfaces, hazardous cleaning chemicals, confined spaces, and more. These all add up to the reason the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have begun taking a closer look at dairy farms. While most industries are accustomed to OSHA rules and audits, it is rather new and unfamiliar to agriculture. University of Minnesota Extension in cooperation with the Center for Dairy Farm Safety (University of Wisconsin – River Falls) is offering a series of two-day short courses around Minnesota.

What a long fall off the dairy cliff would have been like

January 1, 2013
Walt Cooley
Most said falling off the dairy cliff wouldn’t happen because it never had before. For a short time, Congress let it happen. But what did it mean for your milk check and rising milk prices? Experts say very little. Congress would have had to delay enacting a new farm bill for much longer for the effects of parity pricing milk to have been painful. “I remember being in ag policy class and having this question: Why do we always have a farm bill?” dairy market analyst and Daily Dairy Report publisher Mary Ledman says.
