USDEC: Softer global market conditions prevail

Global dairy prices are off 20 to 30 percent from their spring 2011 peaks as swelling milk production worldwide has turned supply deficits into surpluses. As a result, rising inventories are expected to keep downward pressure on international dairy markets in the second half of 2012, according to presenters at the U.S. Dairy Export Council’s (USDEC) spring Board of Directors and Membership Meeting May 2 in Chicago. The meeting attracted a record turnout – a reflection of the broad understanding of the need to operate more effectively in international markets.

National MooFest brings farmers and consumers together

Rita Holt has a farmer’s heart. That’s the secret ingredient to her award winning recipes. Each year for the past several, she’s entered a contest at National MooFest, an Athens, Tennessee, event celebrating the community’s connection to dairy farmers. or scroll down to see more details on MooFest. Twice now, she’s won; once for using dairy products in a recipe and once for her homemade ice cream. She said she and her husband, Dean, used to farm but when she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, they sold all but a few acres. They still occasionally keep livestock around – a few chickens or a cow, which she spoils rotten.

Penn State identifies strategies of profitable dairies

What proven strategies and tools can Pennsylvania dairy producers use on-farm to become more profitable? The Penn State Extension Dairy Team has spent the past two years investigating the practices of a cross section of Pennsylvania dairy farms and is now sharing its research findings with producers and the agribusiness professionals who serve them. “We found great opportunities to increase profits on dairy operations,” notes Rebecca White, senior project associate with the Penn State Extension Dairy Team, who helped conduct the research.

North Dakota governor commits to Fuel Up to Play 60

North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple pledged his support to the Fuel Up to Play 60 program, an in-school nutrition and physical activity program launched by National Dairy Council and NFL, in collaboration with the USDA, to combat childhood obesity. The Governor joined education officials, Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring, and North Dakota dairy farmers and industry representatives on April 19 to sign the symbolic pledge.

Links between animal health and food safety studied

Alan Mathew, head of Purdue University's Department of Animal Sciences, was on a team of experts that examined the relationship between the health of agricultural animals and consumers' increasing demand for safe food. Mathew co-wrote "Healthy Animals Make Confident Consumers" with five other members of a task force organized by the nonprofit Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST). "This was our attempt to review the literature regarding animal health and food safety and determine what research needs to be conducted to determine the connection between the care and health of food animals and food safety," Mathew said.

Ontario Farm Products Marketing Commission approves Somatic Cell Count (SCC) regulatory standard change Effective August 1, 2012, the SCC standard in Ontario Regulation 761 will change from the current 500,000 to 400,000 cells per millilitre. The SCC penalty program will not change. A producer will continue to be subject to an SCC penalty if the monthly weighted-average (MWA) SCC test is greater than or equal to the regulatory limit in the current, or most recently completed month, and two out of three previous months.

Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium enters new era

May 7, 2012
Governor Walker recently signed into law Senate Bill 396, which will provide the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) with enough funding to maintain its mandatory premises registration. This funding will provide the DATCP with the necessary tools to react to the state livestock industry if a disease outbreak were to occur.
