MSU to begin work on energy-producing anaerobic digester

April 27, 2012
Michigan State University (MSU) is poised to begin work on a new anaerobic digester, a system that will not only help re-use waste from MSU’s farms and dining halls but also will create energy for some on-campus buildings. At its April 13 meeting, the MSU Board of Trustees authorized the administration to begin work on the project, an approximately $5 million venture that should pay for itself in less than 15 years.

Traveling road show targets heat stress

April 27, 2012
Dario Martinez
Heat stress causes losses in several areas on dairy farms across the country during the summer months – in addition to milk production losses. In order to help producers mitigate the negative effects of heat stress on dairy cattle, the Dairy Heat Stress Road Show program was created well in advance of 2012’s summer months. The road show took place in four locations throughout the southern U.S. and one location in Puerto Rico, making its debut last December in Florida. The remaining three stops of the road show took place in early April, with the last stop taking place in Tulare, California, on April 6.

A webinar in early April discussed this topic as well as the launch of a new program designed to help provide a solution to this concern. After nearly four years of development, Select Sires Inc. launched StrataGEN, a program focused on providing an easy-to-use solution to help producers obtain optimal genetic progression while minimizing inbreeding within their herds.
