McDonald’s named Darigold in its 2012 Best of Sustainable Supply report. The winners are companies that implement innovative and effective ways to address challenges to improve food sources, the environment, communities and employee wellness across the world.
Darigold was one of 51 recipients of the global honor, out of 400 entries.
The Senate Ag Committee held a farm bill hearing on March 7 titled “Healthy Food Initiatives, Local Production and Nutrition.” This hearing explored innovative opportunities in agriculture through policies that assist the development of local markets for farmers – connecting them to the growing consumer demand for locally produced, healthy food options.
For years, the rising cost of energy and feed, along with tightening credit, have forced droves of dairy farmers in southeastern Georgia to scale back or close shop entirely. From 1997 to 2007, the industry shed an average of 1,820 cows and 47 operations per year, according to USDA statistics.
There is a bright spot, however: pasture-based dairies.

Advanced Comfort Technology, Inc’s Holly Harper attended a biannual gathering of Michigan’s Robotic Milking User Group in March. Harper provided an overview of the group’s history (it was founded in 2010) and then a recap of what was discussed at that meeting.
We found one of the most interesting topics discussed was that some producers were playing calf sounds in the robot stalls to help the cows let down their milk more quickly.

World Dairy Expo’s Board of Directors approved five new members at its annual meeting, held March 6 at the Alliant Energy Center, in Madison, Wisconsin.
The board is composed of a variety of dairy business professionals from the U.S. and Canada. Established in 1970 as World Dairy Expo, Inc. (WDE), the board serves in an advisory role to the management.
Five new members will join the board of directors. The new directors include: Buster Goff, Callum McKinven, Paula Bovre, Jim Crowley, Jr. and Kate VandenBosch.
